A/N: I'm really sorry I haven't updated in the last few months... Honestly I've kinda forgotten about it and there's no excuses but I had the urge to write so here you go have a nice trip in Bookavania :)
There was a bright light shining from the heavens above, I thought. The tranquility was rather satisfying, to say the very least. Feather-like clouds were resting on my back, supporting my non-existent weight. I breathed slowly and sighed contently.
...And reality came crashing back so quickly such that I can't even breathe.
Literally.
Unwillingly, I opened my eyes to find someone sitting on my stomach with a handcuff that's about to seize me from my freedom.
He, or she, was wearing a hoodie covering their eyes and nose, though somehow they don't seem to have the problem of seeing clearly in front of them. Despite the mysteriously dark outfit, and the fact they're about to capture me and possibly send me into the unknown, they radiated a sense of calmness.
These are good people, a voice inside me seemed to whisper. I don't object to this, surprisingly. They weren't hurting me, with whatever they were doing. I let them take my arm and bound them together tightly, before releasing and dropping them on the floor. All the while I merely looked at them expectantly.
Something isn't right, the other, more familiar voice told me, use your instincts, where is everyone else?
Was there anyone else that I was supposed to know or be worried about? Probably not.
This was the way things were supposed to go, and I was about to be sent to a better place where everything's perfect. There would be no more warfare, no more hunger, and everyday life would only consist of playing jump-on-the-spikes or dying violently in the best way. I smiled just thinking about the world I would be expecting. It would the utopia to everyone's hopes and dreams.
Yes, that's right, because you're human beings and human beings don't deserve to die peacefully, inner voice number one spoke again. I think I'm going to name them. Baritone would fit this one.
He's right. What am I even thinking about?
"..." The hooded person spoke for the first time. He said please follow me, but... no, not really. It's almost like he had spoken directly into my mind, a voice inside of me not controlled by me. It's a nice feeling to have. He would know everything about me and nothing would be private. That's why humanity had perished anyways, because they couldn't stop being selfish and had to hide critical information to their friends. Surely these people are smarter than those humans.
"This way please," he spoke aloud, and suddenly an empty space seem to have found it's place inside me. Speaking inside me was soothing, why did he stop?
Could I possibly do it too?
"Hello", I tried tentatively, concentrated on the back on the hooded figure in front of me, gliding ever so smoothly across the barren medical like room. No response. He remained silent as ever. Also, if you were wondering, I did figure out he was a boy due to his voice, in the assumption that these people work the same way as humans do.
My chain of thoughts was broken by the sudden stopping of his figure and me nearly slamming into him full on.
"Here we are," he told me quietly in the midst of the silent room that emerged in front of us. "Go get something and join your friends."
But I didn't have friends. I had nobody with me, so naturally I made no intention to move. He briefly turned his head and said, "I have more to do than residing with one of you clingy cupcakes." On that note, my handcuffs clicked, was retrieved and he disappeared.
After pondering for several moments and coming to the conclusion that he would not be coming back in a short while, I decided to push the door lightly and silence greeted me.
The room was full of people, don't you worry, but they were moving in a rather controlled manner. In the centre of the room was something that resembled a food counter, and people were moving in line in sync, one foot then the other, left and right and left. On the side people were eating equally in sync and there was no chatter.
Somewhere in the back of my mind something told me they resembled robots in a factory handling goods.
Stomach rumbling, I decide to give in to the peculiar situation and follow the crowd to get food. That's when I realise the reason of the synchronisation. It's much quicker and easier to follow the others than to get your own style. It's tidier too. So I followed them and became a robot, because robots certainly are smarter than humans.
After five or so minutes, it's my turn. A spoon of what looks like energy food was dumped on my tray along with a cup of transparent liquid that danced around my cup. It's hypnotising to watch and the patterns were beautifully programmed. Still, I forced my eyes away from the cup with what little determination I had and scanned the room. In the midst of the sea of browns, a blond head staring down at the same nutrient pack I was carrying.
Go on, talk to him, inner voice number two urged. Speaking of names... how about Contralto? I didn't like her as much, but still I did. This person did somewhat feel familiar, and maybe he'll answer some questions.
"Hello." I sat and greeted cheerfully.
"It sure is a great day today, we're all going to get tortured and what is a human like you still wandering around here? May I ask for your name, dear comrade?" He spoke without emotion, monotonously. Admittedly, I was perplexed and disoriented by his response.
My name? What is even my name?
Delta, said Baritone. That's quite an impressive five-lettered name.
"Delta," I replied. It sounded just right where it belonged.
"Epsilon," he replied without emoting, again.
You sure do recognise him, don't you...Delta? Contralto asked, with a trace of disbelief and worry in her voice.
You sure shouldn't. Baritone snapped quickly, emoting isn't natural, without emotions we can all serve the cause without sentiment.
Baritone's right, I mused.
I don't think Contralto should ever have misled me into such difficult situations. Now I'm stuck with communicating with someone who's obviously going to be a hinder to me helping whatever this "cause" is.
