My Alarm clock. My annoying alarm clock. It didn’t wake me up. I not sure what was more irritating, that it makes a shrill piercing sound that could attracted cockroaches, or the fact that half the time it doesn’t work. Seriously.

Blinking awake, I yawned and instinctively looked at the clock and choked on my morning saliva. Gross.  It read 9:30. I was half an hour late. Give or take.

Taking my chances on what was on the ground, I leapt out and immediately crumbled to the ground as I stepped on a bit of lego, which, if you haven’t done, is like stepping repeatedly on fire hot coals.

I shouted in pain, hoping around, followed by several curse words. After recovering, I shoved the school cardigan over my singlet, and grabbed my bag on the chair while shoving my tie and pleated skirt in, swinging the door open with so much force it bounced against the wall.

Two steps at a time, I stumbled down stairs and snatched three energy bars from my brother’s stash and shoved it in my bag, and left the house. I roughly pulled my hair up into a bun on the top of my hair and began to walk before a voice stopped me.

“Forgetting your shoes?” Drake’s drawling voice echoed, a grin evident on his face. Sometimes I thank God that I have a brother, who cares, half the time.

It only occurred to me that I was barefoot. Running back in, I grabbed a pair of slip on black flats and walked back out towards school, munching furiously on my pitiful breakfast, each step speeding up to a jog.

Finally seeing a pillar of my school, I went to check the time on my phone in my bag. Which wasn’t there. Face-palming myself, I hoped for the best and be able to sneak through the security. Stupid Rich people school.

“C’mon.. Let me through..” I muttered as the rest of the school emerged over the hill. Coming to the gates, a stood still, seeing if I could hear anyone ready to pounce on me and charge me for ‘trespassing’.

I gave a huge sigh and slipped through the bars – no, I'm not super skinny; the gate just isn’t that safe, I mean, seriously, the bars were like, 10 inches apart – and felt my self-triumph dissolve as a burly man in maroon uniform stomped towards me.

“Hey! You! What are you doing?” He barked, pointing a finger at me. His face was rather squashed up and red, like a squashed tomato, to put it delicately.

Okay maybe that was harsh, I thought to myself as he loomed over me and said, “You shouldn’t be here, I doubt you’d be able to pay such a school, ridiculous price.” He grabbed me under the arm and dragged me into the school, grunting about expensive schools and crazy rich people.

He halted to a stop and knocked loudly on a door, as I dusted myself off and checked the door. PRINCIPAL was written on a faux gold plaque.

“Come in!” A loud voice boomed. I can just imagining the principal’s bald head and his big nose, his thick eyebrows furrowed into a brown caterpillar.

The security man dragged me in and shoved me into a chair, and gave a triumphant smile. “Caught this one trespassing.” And left the room, probably to drag some other innocent child around like a toy again.

The principal studied me for a moment, taking in my wild look, and his eyes lay on the school cardigan. He sighed, muttering about ‘wasting time’ and getting new patrols.

“You're a student here aren’t you?” He said, rubbing his eyebrows tiredly. I nodded quickly.  “Then don’t worry, go to the front office please, and get a late pass, whatever.” And he waved me off.
