**RING RIIIIING**

The alarm beckons me to get up and go to work. I tiredly reach over and shut my alarm clock off. Hesitantly, I get out of bed and go to the bathroom. I strip down and get in the shower. I hum Isn't She Lovely by Stevie Wonder. Normally I sing my lungs out, but it is early in the morning and if I woke my mother and sister this early I would get it. It has happened a few times already. As soon as I am done I hop out of the shower and dry myself off with soft towels. I change into my white polo and khakis. I manage to get out of the house at a good time. I get my bike on the side of the house.

I begin to ride and within minutes I can smell the sweet scent of the bakery. I park my bike in the alley beside the bakery and go in the side entrance. I put my crimson and white striped apron on and look around the bakery. Other than my colleagues it is pretty empty. My colleagues are primarily old ladies which isn't necessarily bad because it makes me feel more macho than I actually am.

Gladys says sounding chipper, "Morning, Harry! How is school going?"

I respond, "I just finished school. You are stuck with me all summer." We both chuckle lightly. I go to the back and see boys my age slaving over the oven trying to make sure everything is going to be ready for opening in a few hours. I fill the display with pastries and cakes. Not long later the sign of the door is changed from closed to open and the bakery fills with customers. For some reason I have a feeling something important is going to happen today, but it might be nothing.

**BUZZ BUZZZZ**

I yawn, reach over, grab my phone from the nightstand and answer it.

Mandy Cooper (I know her name sounds like Mini Cooper), one of my best friends exclaims, "Girl, where are you? You were supposed to meet us."

Imogen Moore, my other best friend, adds in the background, "Where have you been?! You are never late!"

I ease their worried minds, "I am coming! A girl has got to do a final mirror check. You two are just so beautiful. I don't want to pale in comparison."

"Please! You are gorgeous. Get your butt down here!" Mandy scoffs. She hangs up and I leap out of bed. I go to my closet and change into a floral blue dress and my black converse. I let my long blond hair fall in it's natural wave. I quickly do my make-up and grab my bag. I pop a piece of gum in my mouth. Mmm, minty! I open my bedroom window and climb out onto the fire escape. I can't go through the front door because I would be questioned about every aspect of my day by my parents. It just seems easier to sneak out. I quickly go down the stairs and reach the bottom of the alley. I see the side entrance of my dad's bakery and a kid's bike. I instantly think about how that bike is going to be stolen. I walk from the alley and see my friends standing in front of my family bakery.

Imogen exclaims when she spots me, "Charlie! Thank goodness you are alive! By how long you took I thought you died." I laugh and give each of them a slight hug. I am shorter than both of the girls, but only by a few inches. Mandy has her bronze hair in a cute pixie cut. It looks good on her, but I would never cut my long hair. Her green eyes I just love, but I am satisfied with my blue eyes. Imogen has long strawberry blond hair and lovely long legs that I am utterly jealous of. Her grey eyes I don't particularly like at all though.

"Shall we?" I motion to the bakery doors. We walk in like we own the place. Well, I do.

I hand a customer their order. I give them a winning smile.

"Have a nice day!" I see three girls walk in the bakery. The one who really catches my eye is the gorgeous blonde that throws her gum away in the garbage. They walk up to Barbara. I rush over to Barbara who is about to serve the girls. "Barbara! Need any help?" She nods and instructs me to knead dough at the table behind her. I listen as the girls order from Barbara. They seem to already be acquainted with her. I pick up a clump of dough and slam it down on the flour covered table. The flour bounces up and gets all over me. I am utterly embarrassed. Laughs fill the room.

Until I hear a sweet feminine voice ask, "Are you okay?" I spin around and see the cute blonde I spotted earlier looking at me. It is good my face is covered in flour because I am sure I am blushing.

I nod, "Um, yeah. I am just uh... dusty." She giggles.

"Okay, Dusty. Come here." I walk up to the display case right in front of her. She leans on it. "Close your eyes." Hesitantly, I do. I feel light air being blown on my face. Her breath smells refreshingly minty. As soon as she runs out of breath she carefully dusts my face off. She runs her fingers in my hair removing some of the flour. I open my eyes and she is smiling at me. She has gorgeous blue eyes and vivid white teeth. She is just beautiful. "Well, that is a lot better, right?" I nod. My jaw just kind of hangs open. I don't know what to say. She giggles at me. I smile faintly. I am honestly at a lost for words. Her redheaded friend interrupts one of the best moments of my life by handing the blond the pastry she bought. She takes a bite out of it. "You want a bite?" I shake my head. She leaves me there and walks towards the exit with her friends. She winks at me with her adorable smile. "Bye, Dusty!" She walks out of the bakery and what feels like out of my life. Barbara says something to me, but I am not listening. I get on my tiptoes still being able to see the blonde in the windows of the store front.

"I think you fancy Charlie." Barbara says looking at me. I look over at her.

"The blonde's name is Charlie?"

"Yep, Charlotte Baker, but everyone calls her Charlie... By the way you have to stay late and clean the flour up." I nod. I have to stay late and clean again!

***Later after closing***

I sit in my bedroom reading a book. Suddenly I hear singing. It is beautiful, but too loud for it being so late. I guess someone left the radio on in the bakery. I go down stairs from my family's apartment into the bakery. I peer in the doorway when I see Dusty, the poor boy that got covered in flour that I helped clean. He dances around the room all alone while sweeping the floor. He sings Isn't She Lovely. I cover my mouth and try not to laugh. He is actually singing very well, but he is just not a good dancer. He thinks he is all alone. He is just the cutest. His hair is chocolate brown and has natural loose curls. He has gorgeous green eyes and when he smiles his pink lips reveal his nice white teeth. Then, as his smile grows the dimples dig deeper in his cheeks.

I watch him awhile, but he finishes cleaning and shuts all the lights down. He locks everything. He walks towards me, but it is so dark he can't see me. I run back up stairs before he can spot me. Wow! Cute Dusty can sing.
