Silence. All she could hear was silence.
And she thought this was quite peculiar- especially for a hospital. She wanted to hear the soft creaks of wheels turning, a small cart going down the hall, nurses talking under their breath, but she heard nothing.
Valka Haddock couldn't even hear her breathing. It was as if the world were falling apart, except nothing could be heard. It was like watching your favorite part of a movie on mute, and it felt sort of empty that the sound could not go with the events that were happening.
Valka sighed loudly and attempted to make some noise to break the silence. She tapped the side of her seat. It helped with her anxiety, but she wasn't listening. This feeling... it was horrid.
An hour ago, Valka could hear everything. She heard her four year old son complaining about his head, his arms, his legs, everything... everything had hurt about him. She soon heard him fall to the ground, one last huff before he blacked out. And she heard the sirens right outside her door as the ambulance arrived shortly after. As she joined the people in the ambulance, watching her son's limp body be hoisted into the vehicle, and listening to the shouts and calls around her, her ears became deaf. She couldn't hear much, and she couldn't even tell whether it was a mental problem or a physical problem.
Valka's thoughts and replays of the scene in her head were finally interrupted by the sound of a door gently opening, then silently closing. She looked up and watched as a thin looking woman walked toward her.
"Mrs. Haddock, you may visit your son now. We would like to talk to you about his... health as well." The woman said as she reached her.
Well, her ears were working. It was then that Valka realized that she could hear, but her mind and soul were close to breaking apart. Hope was the only string left.
Valka nodded at the doctor and the woman led her into the room.
The room had some noise. It wasn't silent like the waiting room had been. The sounds of the heart monitor were beeping, and Valka only hoped it was normal for a four year old's heart. Her eyes searched for her son, and there he was, tangled among the many chords that connected him to all the machines.
"Hiccup," She whispered and went over to him. She engulfed him in a tight hug, and felt his small arms reach towards her.
"Hi mummy," He answered sweetly. "Where have you been? I missed you."
Valka had to recollect herself for a few seconds before returning to speak. "I was just outside the waiting room sweetie, but I'm here now. I'm so glad you're okay."
She hugged Hiccup for a few more seconds before breaking off and turning her attention to the nurse, who was patiently waiting as the two reunited.
"Alright, Mrs. Haddock, come over here." The nurse said and walked over to a computer.
Valka walked over and saw an x-ray version of Hiccup.
"Hiccup seems to have some mishaps in his body. Some parts of his brain mysteriously age faster than the usual four year old's. This has some blessings, and unfortunately curses.
"Hiccup will be quite intelligent. He will be capable of learning at a faster pace than regular children at his age, because his brain works much quicker and faster. However, Hiccup will only be able to live for so long.
"Hiccup has only about 25-30 years to live. That sounds like a lot, but time goes quite quickly with children. We do not know how this happened, nor have any clue. There was word of a virus going on, but we are sure that the virus did not affect Hiccup at all. About the blackout he had from earlier, that was because the effects of... whatever he had were becoming too large for his brain to block out. This caused panic all around his body, eventually resulting in him fainting. We have prescribed some medication to him."
The nurse pulls away from the computer (she had been making notes of the boy's brain) and looks at Valka.
"I am so sorry that this has happened, Mrs. Haddock. That is as much as I can tell you. If you would like to know more, please contact this man. He knows far more about Hiccup's case than we do at here." The nurse gives Valka a card, which she shakily takes and tucks in her bag.
"Hiccup will be let out by tomorrow morning. Thank you for your time, Mrs. Haddock. I'll leave you two for a couple minutes, then you will be free to go home." And with that, the nurse stood up and left.
Once the nurse left, Valka engulfed Hiccup once again. But this time, she began to sob.
"What's wrong, mummy? Are you okay?" Hiccup asked, hugging his mother in return.
Valka nodded her head. "Yes... yes, sweetie, I am... Mommy is just a bit stressed right now." She managed to choke out before crying once again.
"It's okay mummy. My arms and legs and head don't hurt anymore. I'm sorry for making you cry mummy. I won't do it again." He answered quietly.
"No, Hiccup, tell me when your body hurts from now on. That was mommy's mistake. I should have listened to you." Valka argued, and wiped her tears.
"Okay mummy. Are you going to stay here with me while I sleep?" Hiccup asked, yawning. Valka shook her head. "The nurse won't let me. But I'll see you tomorrow, and you can come home then. Does that sound okay?"
Hiccup nodded and smiled sleepily. "Yes, mummy... Goodnight, I love you..." Were his last words before he fell asleep.
A/N: Hello everyone, we are presenting you all with a new book: Fragile! This book is based off of the movie Jack and the Cuckoo Clock Heart, so most of my ideas will be credited to that movie. The movie has deep meaning and very much inspired me to start a book. Not all the ideas will be from the movie, I will be adapting some of my own. I have high hopes for this book and I think that this will turn out to be a great one.
Don't forget to rate us, comment ideas, and give us a follow! We have amazing Hiccelsa stories!
