One Week Later

Chris Mayers

"Chris it's no use! I don't see anyone out here and we checked the waters about five times today. That girl is dead." My best friend Ferg complained, as he took a seat beside me on the submarine. I was almost feeling as if I should take his words and pull the plug on the entire search. It has been a week ever since the girl fell over board, and ever since the story has been all over the news. Everything from her parents suing Royal Caribbean cruise line, to people all over the fact she was handicap, is all I have been hearing since.

"We can't just call it quits... what if she's out there?" I questioned, taking a swig of the 40 in my hand.

"Chris, it has been nearly a week ever since that girl fell in the sea. I doubt she is alive unless she is a mermaid or some shit. So come on, lets get some rest, we need to get back tomorrow morning, and we all can use as much sleep as possible." He replied, taking the liquor from my hand, before setting on he table beside me. I sighed, brushing Ferg off.

"You can go without me. I need some time to think for a second." I said softly, as Ferg nodded his head, leaving me alone in the 'living room' of the sub. I raised from my chair, taking the bottle of 40 with me as I waltzed into the kitchen. I then grabbed a bottle of peanut butter and jelly from the fridge, before making my self a PB&J sandwich. I bite into the sandwich as the jelly oozed out and the peanut butter stuck to my teeth, bringing back childhood memories. It felt good eating a PB&J sandwich no matter how old I was, I still thought back to the ones my mom made for me after school when I was younger.

Once I was done with my sandwich, and scarfed the remainder down with milk, I checked the time on my Rolex watch. I noticed it was ten thirty-three, way past the rule of never leaving the sub after eight P.M. I knew Ferg and the rest of the guys would kill me if they new I was leaving the sub without telling them, but I just felt as if the girl wasn't gone, and I still had a chance to save her.

"Sorry guys." I mumbled quietly, once I was fully suited in my swim gear and oxygen tank. As soon as I knew the coast was clear, I tried my best to quietly escape out without the guys noticing, which obviously wasn't as easy as I thought before. The door was loud, but once I was finally out, I dived into the sea, pulling my goggles onto my face as I swam away from the sub.

I swam around mindlessly for what seemed like forever, but no use. I felt as if Ferg's thougts may have been true, and this girl was really dead. I swallowed my pride, before turning to swim back to the submarine.

But before I could make it there I seen what seemed unusual swim past me. I knew I may have just been my eyes playing tricks on me, but then I seem it again! And this time I saw a green fin swim away, almost similar to a mermaids.

No Chris there's not any mermaids and definitely any other mythological creatures lingering through the Atlantic Ocean.

I may have just seen a dolphin. Yeah dolphins live in the Atlantic and swim at night right?

As I continued onto the path to the ship, I saw this was no dolphin, and definitely not my eyes playing tricks on me. It was a girl! But instead of legs she had a long green fin, similar to one like a mermaids! I felt astonished looking at the beautiful creature before me, from her bright green tail, to her ginger colored mane that hung past her shoulders. She was beautiful, whether she was real or not.

Am I dreaming?

"No you're not dreaming, this is completely real." The girl before me answered. Though I wondered how she did know what I was saying due to me thinking, and not saying this out loud. "Mermaids can read minds by the way." She smiled, swimming closer to me before touching my hand.

The way she spoke was so angelic and soft, making me feel as if this entire thing was so surreal. I don't understand how this all happened, from me meeting mermaids, to how the girl resembled the one missing from the paper, but I tried my best not to underestimate the situation. You never know what he hell can happen. I looked down at my oxygen tank to see that I was almost running on the reserved portion, signaling that it was time for me to get back to the sub.

Can you come with me?

"I'm not sure. Mermaids are like fish. Either I may die or I might just become a human again." She answered a small frown sitting upon her face as I nodded my head in understandably. Though I did know very little about mermaids, being that I was too naive to believe while my teacher explained mythological creatures in my Marine Biology studies. I was beginning to pick up some knowledge on them.

How the hell do mermaids piss?

A look of slight embarrassment covered her face as she let out a small giggle. "Don't worry about it." She smiled, looking at me with her crystal blue orbs.

Last question of the night, what's your name ma? I mean you're beautiful as hell.

I questioned with a smirk, as a smile formed on her face. "Alana. But you an just call me Lana." She smiled, "I know you have to go, so I guess I'll. see you later." She then said with a look of sadness gleaming in her eyes. As she turned to swim away I grabbed her arm lightly, before she was gone.

My name is Chris by the way. And can you meet me here again tomorrow morning?

I asked, she looked at me uneasy before shrugging her shoulder as she gave in and showed her beautiful smile. "I'll try." She added with a small wave, as her emerald green fin swaggered away trough the sea, as her figure became smaller and smaller with each move.
