Out of Orbit

Nicolas closed the door shut and sighed to himself. This girl was strange; there was no doubt in that. But, she had something about her. She was appealing; her aura was somewhat calming.

She was a pleasant human being.

"Is she asleep?" asked Alex. She was holding a tray of crackers and tea.

Nicolas shook his head and signed, "Not yet. You should wait." Alex nodded and set the tray on the table.

"[Name] seems like a sweet girl. I wonder what made her so timid...afraid of this world. She's tough, but she looks scared. As if tomorrow is a lucky day if she wakes up alive." Alex bit her lip, trying to hold back the forming tears. "It's scary, to think that [Name] lives with that."

The deaf man sat next to her and patted her back. He understood how Alex felt. They all felt like that. Especially him, a Twilight. A living monster that can be put down any moment.

Worick leaned against the wall. "I don't mind any of this, but thing's are going to go out of orbit real quick."

"Leave me if you want. I don't care. You never cared for me at least." The words echoed and echoed into an eternal hell.

"Fine. Stay like that. Maybe you'll become a prostitute. Become dirt, hag."

I was on the floor, bloodied and beaten. I spat out a mixture of saliva and blood and wiped my swollen cheek. My lips were split, and my forehead was tender.

He was tall, dangerous. A cyclops. His eyepatch taunted me; his lone, icy blue eye stared back into my bruised ones.

"Get out of here! What are you waiting for? For us to make up? Hell. No." He turned around with ease, not bothering to throw one last punch or kick me again.

I sat there and waited until he was gone before I cried.

"Why am I alive?"

I choked and grabbed at my throat. I swore something was on me, holding me underwater. My eyes opened, expecting to see pitch-black. But, the gleaming warmth of sunshine greeted me. I panicked, not recognizing where I was.

The door clicked open, and a familiar face popped in. Alex.

"Hey, you're up. You knocked out super fast. Did you sleep well?"

"Of course," I lied. "Slept better than ever."

She smiled. "Worick got breakfast, so you can freshen up and meet us in the kitchen." She closed the door and left.

I noticed at the foot of my bed was a new change of clothes. Not some short skirt or booty-shorts. Just a casual long-sleeve tee and nice cargo pants. My typical attire.

I washed my face and examined my body for any signs of healing. My bruises were slowly clearing up, but my body still felt like glass. I could shatter any moment.

Making my way to the kitchen, Worick already had a plate of hot food for me. "Sit and enjoy." I sat across from him, making awkward eye contact with the deaf man. I picked up the fork and poked at the toast and eggs.

"What? It's edible if you're wondering. Nico can cook pretty well."

I shook my head. "No, it's not that. I... I'm not worth feeding. Honest, I can go days without food."

There was silence, and my stomach growled.

Alex giggled. "It seems like days. Don't be shy; just eat. You need the energy. Besides, you're like family now."

Nicolas nodded. "We adopted the stray."

Since I suddenly became adopted by Alex, Worick, and Nicolas, that meant I also had to participate in errand runs. Worick decided that it would be safer if I went with Nicolas when errands needed to be done. I had no say in it, so Nicolas and I were in charge of this week's errands.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"I don't know," Nicolas signed. "We have to visit the brothel, I think."

The city of Ergastulum was mysterious with its sudden and random turns and corners. Nicolas had to lead me by the hand to prevent me from hitting a wall every time.

We finally reached the brothel, Bastard. He pushed open the doors and completely ignored the half-naked women there. We walked up a set of stairs to see whoever it was that needed our help.

"You should come again," a cooing voice said.

"Definitely. It was great." A door slammed.

My heart quickened; my hand clenched in Nicolas's, pulling him to a stop.

"Fuck. What a waste of time... She wasn't even a good lay." The voice was so familiar and so frightening.

But I forgot the owner.

"Whatcha gonna do now? You haven't found 'er yet?" Another voice, a burly sound, asked.

"No, but I'm going to. She's gotta be here. This city isn't too small."

I must have been hurting Nicolas because he let go of my hand and pulled me closer to him by the waist.

"Are you sure? It might be a waste of time lookin' for 'er."

"Shut up. We're blood. I know she's here."

I screamed.
