Bacon.
All I can smell is bacon and I'm absolutely loving it. I roll over onto my side and scrunch my nose up as I sniff, trying to get as much of the heavenly scent as possible before I let out a sigh of pure happiness.
Something chuckles beside me and my eyes fly open, my arms pushing me away from the noise with so much force that I go flying off the other side of the bed.
"Owwwwww" I groan into the carpet as I lay in a crumpled heap on my floor.
Now the chuckling has turned into full-on laughter and I furrow my eyebrows still half asleep.
Connor.
"You're an idiot, Williams. You know that right?" Connor says in between laughs, peering over the edge of the bed at my awkward position.
"why are you in my bed?" I say into the carpet so it comes out kinda muffled
"Because you drove yourself home in my car last night and I was drunk so I couldn't drive myself home after that. Your folks said I was right to crash in here considering absolutely nothing was going to happen. You know, with you already out like a dead woman" he raised an eyebrow at me and already the memories were coming back.
"Oh yeah" I mumble into the carpet again.
"Can you get your head out of the carpet?" He pops his head further over the edge again and pokes my cheek
"I'm hungry" I mumble again before springing up, taking Connor by surprise and waltzing downstairs towards the smell of the gods
I take the stairs two at a time, racing towards the kitchen. Mum was already awake and cooking so I piled up my plate and took a seat, Connor not too far behind me.
"Mom. Have I ever told you that you're the best mom in the world?" I say with my mouth full of scrambled egg
"Only when you're hungry, honey" she winks at me
"Well I love you" my voice muffled again by more food.
"I know sweetie. I know" she shakes her head taking a seat in the next room with her breakfast.
I can feel Connor staring at me and it's confirmed when I glance over to him and he's giving me a look that communicates "what are you?"
I just shrug in return and finish up with my breakfast, pushing my chair back and taking the plate to the sink.
"So Williams. What's the plan for today?" Connor raises an eyebrow at me as he too finishes his breakfast.
"Well." I start, placing my fingers on my chin in mock-pondering
"You're going to get back into that car over there," I say as I point out the window, "and go home! I'm sure you've got heaps of work to do and I'm tired so my plan is to sleep some more, wake up, have lunch, go back to sleep, wake up, have dinner, then head back to bed ready for Sunday!"
I was pretty happy with my Saturday plans and as you can imagine, I was pretty wrecked when Connor laughs and shakes his head, Vowing that he's not going anywhere for a while. After a full 10 minutes of my protests and my own mother telling me to shut up and go upstairs to start studying, I reluctantly give in.
"I can't believe you have more power than me in my own house" I grumble to Connor as I climb the stairs. He just grins in reply and bounds up after me, grabbing his laptop from his bag by my door and claiming a spot on my bed.
"Come sit" he grins, patting the spot next to him.
"Gee thanks Connor. Thank you for inviting me to sit on my own bed" I frown at him, but take a seat anyway.
"What are we starting with" I sigh.
"Bio I reckon" he clicks through his folders until he finds his notes and we begin.
Connor's actually really smart (I know right, I was shocked too) and he helped me catch up on some lessons I missed and concepts I didn't understand and by the time we finished everything we could, it was past lunch so I went down to grab some snacks.
My phone was still in my pocket from this morning and surprisingly, I'd been so focused that I hadn't reached for it all morning.
It was filled with messages from Casey asking if I was dead and some notifications from snapchat and Instagram. I opened up Casey's messages first and assured her that I was, in fact, alive, before moving on to snapchat. I was surprised to see that all of Connors gang had added me somehow and I flicked through, adding them back and smiled to myself, shaking my head.
"Jade! Hurry up you'll lose your zone!" Connor calls from upstairs.
"Coming!" I yell back, grabbing a Punnet of strawberries, chips and a box of shapes before running back up.
We started on English next and this was obviously the part where I had to step in. It was my stronger topic and he wasn't really understanding the whole setting this with The Great Gatsby.
"No okay, so Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan. She used to date Gatsby in like high school or whatever and he's been in love with her ever since, now he's trying to get her back with all his fancy stuff and parties" I explain slowly, hoping he understands my more contemporary version of events easier.
"Oh. Well, what relevance does Myrtle have then?" He crinkles his eyebrows together, looking rather cute.
"She's Tom's mistress, the one he's cheating on daisy with," I say, also probably slower than necessary.
"Okay. Okay, I think I get it" He says, slowly nodding.
"Great. Well, our task is to write an essay that outlines how gender affects the characters in the 20's, so let's get started" I open my own laptop, moving to Word and typing out the heading and some notes to start me off.
"Hold on," Connor says quickly, turning his torso away from being briefly before turning back with his phone in his hand.
"Connor rather get started now, you can check that later 'you'll lose your zone' remember?" I mimic, using my fingers as inverted commas.
"No, it'll only take a sec!" He grabs my hand closest to him and raises his phone.
Understanding this was another "couple moment" I complied, looking back at him awaiting instructions.
He simply smiles from behind his phone and pops his head out from behind it before;
"So myrtle was the side-hoe then?"
I couldn't help it, I burst out laughing, but more of a 'you're an idiot' laugh than actual humor because, well, side hoe? Only Connor Millar would.
He grins at me and turns the screen around to show the phone angled towards our joined hands and our twin laptop screens, both with documents titled 'The Great Gatsby and Gender' and me smiling at him like a goof - mid laugh.
"well-done dude. That's actually a good shot" I remark
"Very couple-y" he agrees, before we look at each other and laugh uncontrollably at how bad we were at shaking these moments off.
"Focus!" I yell at him, wiping tears from my eyes with the last of my chuckles.
"This is due tomorrow!"
And with that, I had one of the most productive Saturday's of my high school career, and I kind of enjoyed it too.
