Well that was embarrassing, crying into a vampires arms, like some soppy swooning girl. What's wrong with me? That should not have happened.
We were walking through the back alleys of the city, Alex a silent shadow behind me never faltering, on high alert, he hadn't questioned me about what had happened on the roof, or about what I had done to save us which was a relief, I wasn't in the mood for chit chat.
"We are nearly there," I whispered knowing his extreme senses would hear me, it was strange how I had adjusted to working with a vampire, and it was almost frightening how comfortable I was with him. He just seemed so familiar, like déjà vu.
We turned down a dying street where the plants had taken over and were growing inside of cars and up buildings. Everything was abandoned; panic and mayhem littered the haunting past of these roads, you could almost hear the screams echo from the walls and cutting through the deadly silence of what used to be a thriving city. I turn to Alex ready to pounce my hate on him for what vampires had done to the beautiful human race when I saw his face, it was plastered with sorrow and pain those bright green eyes seemed to dull as his gazed wondered over the abyss of nothing, everyone was gone; life, fun and love were no more. His clenched hands was the reaction that made think maybe not all vampires were the same, or at least not this one.
"Come on this way" he followed me like a lost puppy, not knowing what do or say, there was something else in his expression, like he was remembering something he cared for.
We went down several more alley ways that smelt of damp and were decaying when we came to the heavy steel door that had become my sanctuary.
"Wait here I have to warn Charlie, that I'm bringing a menace home" I said to Alex with a playful tone, this mood needed to be lightened especially for what we were about to walk into.
Charlie is very unique and is a genius, but he hates vampires, probably more than I do. He is trying to create a device that kills many vampires at once, he wasn't amused when I pointed out that a bazooka would do that just fine. He informed me that it would be on a much larger scale than a big gun.
'Where are you going to get a bazooka from any way Evangeline?', his tone was stressed and tired but I was determined to make him laugh, so the next day I went out with a skip in my step. You can't even imagine the look on his face when I dumped a war head on his desk and finally he burst out into a fit of laughter.
'Only you can find a rocket launcher in the apocalypse'. He gasped
The memory made me smile, now to face the music and tell him I had brought a vampire home for tea.
'Charlie!'
'Evangeline, in here!'
Charlie was hunched over his desk tinkering with some sort of gadget, with those big goofy looking glasses on to help him see the smaller parts.
'Charlie, don't freak out'
'You do know when someone tells you not to freak out, that their reaction is going to be to freak out at the statement not to freak out let alone at what's not to freak out about'
'You lost me' Charlie was always confusing 'Anyway I seriously mean it, don't freak out it isn't a big deal'
'Ok, ok I won't freak out'
'There is a vampire outside waiting to come in'
Charlie just stared at me for a moment which seemed like forever, his eyes seemed to bulge, suddenly he burst out in hysterical laughter.
'Oh Evangeline that's a good one, but you can't seriously think I would believe you of all people, would bring a vampire here'
'Well I did'
"Ok I get it your trying to trick me, but I know it isn't true so you can stop now' he was still laughing so I just stared at him seriously, he looked at me and laughed some more, then another glance and he started to pale until he was as white as a sheet.
'You're serious aren't you?' He whispered
'Yes, but its okay he saved my life... twice!'
'Oh it's okay is it? You're not normally this stupid Evangeline, he just wants to gain your trust. You're the most wanted vampire hunter like ever, even higher than the Van Helsings, he is toying with you!' he was gasping for breath.
'I am not' came a voice from the door.
'Ahhh' Charlie screeched as he quickly scuttled behind his desk and fumbled with a cross. 'Get back demon!'
Alex seemed highly amused "You do realise crosses don't affect us" he reached around his neck and pulled a shiny silver cross from under his collar.
'That's not going to make him feel better' I stated with an eye roll 'and I told you to wait outside'
'Well I heard the commotion and I thought I would show your friend that I'm actually cute and cuddly, not scary at all' he winked at Charlie.
'Oh great, another sarcastic one' Charlie still seemed uneasy, but that fact that he hadn't been eaten yet seemed to calm him ever so slightly.
