Rain tapped lightly against the tin roof of the house they'd been staying at. Joshua was busy piling wood into the fireplace, his medium length brunette locks covering his eyes something that annoyed him even on the best days but there wasn't much he could do about it. He looked over at the window seeing, rain particles running down the clear glass. He shivered just at the thought of how cold it must've been outside. Hell, it was cold no matter where he was; inside, outside, it was all the same but thankfully it wasn't overly too bad being in the house. He was just about to light the fire when he heard a soft but yet annoyed groan.
"Would you light that thing already? It's freezing in here." a female's voice said. Joshua chuckled softly and turned to look at his sister, Meghan who was sitting on the couch hugging a blanket tightly to her frail small body. Joshua shrugged slightly before letting out a soft chuckle. "You wanna quit being so bossy?" He asked before lighting a match and tossing it into the fire. Within seconds the fire was lit and burning slow. He got up out of the kneeling position he'd been in for more than three hours it felt like anyways. He then walked over to the small brunette sitting on the couch. "Scoot over some." He said, and sat down beside Meghan.
She was busy rubbing her hands together she didn't notice he was rubbing his tired eyes but when she did finally look over at him a frown appeared on her face. "Get some sleep Josh, you need it. I'll keep watch." Meghan said in a soft voice as she rested her hand over his shoulder. Josh chuckled softly and shook his head. "No, I can't go to bed yet." He said and nodded before running his fingers through his hair. "Well if you're not going to bed, then tell me a story. I wanna know what life was like for you before I was born." Meghan said in a quiet voice. Josh rubbed his forehead before yawning tiredly. "I didn't have much a life, I was only four when you were born. Hell, I barely remember dad or mom it's been so long.. Our mom's name was Katherine. That's one of the only things I remember." He said and sighed softly before looking over at Meghan who was looking at him with her piercing blue eyes. "You named me, right? Because mom died right after I was born?" She asked in a quiet tone of voice as she brought her knees to her chest. Josh nodded before smiling slightly. "I did, and I don't even know what brought me to name you Meghan. Just in a matter of moments after looking at you, I knew that you were a Meghan." He said and nodded before leaning back against the couch
He looked over at her but she was out cold, sleeping more soundly than ever. A wide smile was plastered on her light cherry lips, it was the kind of smile that could warm any dark heart. He watched her sleep, all while wondering what type of life this was that they were living. He looked at her and knew she didn't deserve to live in such a shitty world. She deserved to live in a world that was happy and healthy, not dead and decaying day by day but there was nothing he could do to make those wishes he had for her to come true. The only thing he could was make it the best world he could for her, so that's what he was going to do.
As he looked at her sleeping, peacefully it seemed as almost nothing could ruin the peace and warmth in the air.
That was until a group of vicious bandits burst though the front door and window. Each of them, looking completely insane Josh knew deep down this wasn't going to end well for anyone especially him and Meghan.
