Chapter 1

"Jacob! Come on now! Mom wants us there in ten and Max will be picking me up and I have to get ready." Krissy yelled as her seven year old brother got off his school bus.

She had already been waiting for ten minutes after the High school bus had let her off. The cute little blond boy bounced over to her. His bangs fell in his eyes, as always. It was time for another hair cut, Krissy thought. "Krissy!" He was always eager to please his big sister. "Look what I made!" He held up the Christmas reef they had made in class that day.

"It's great!" She said bending down to zip up Jacob's coat. "Where are your new gloves? Did you lose another pair?"

"Hmmm... I thought they were on my hands..." He stared at his hands like he expected the missing gloves to appear. Jacob was always losing things. Their mom had bought him three pairs of gloves this winter alone. And this time, just yesterday.

Krissy smiled at her brother. Ruffled his hair and said "Come one Jake, we got to get to Grammas."

"Mommy hates when you call me Jake." He reminded her as he grabbed her hand and started skipping down the road.

They had just lost their house, in foreclosure. They were staying with their Grandmother, their mother's mom, until their mom found a job and a new place to live.

"Krissy! Jacob!" Their mom, Becca, said as they opened the front door. "I have some good news. Put your coats in the closet and set down."

"Mommy!" Jacob shouted "Look what I made!" Showing his mom the Christmas reef.

"It’s wonder full dear. It looks great! It will look better on our door!" His mother said flipping her son’s hair out of his eyes.

"Gramma's door." Krissy corrected. She resented the fact that they had lost their house.

            "Our door." Her mom corrected.

"Our door? How did you get a house? You have no job." She asked her mother while she was hanging up her coat.

"I got both today." Her mom said smiling proudly. "I bought an old hotel..."

"With no money?" Krissy asked sarcastically.

"Honey set down." Krissy sat in the kitchen chair closest to her. "See, I borrowed some from your college fund for the down payment, then the bank loaned me the rest."

Krissy stared at her mom and jumped out of the chair, almost knocking it down. "You stole my money? My money from Dad? How dare you?" When their father had died he left Jacob and Krissy each $15,000 and put it in trust with their mother.

"Borrowed Krissy, not stole. I'll pay it back!" Krissy's mother said putting her hands up defensively. "You know he didn't leave me anything, and I just need the money to get the hotel up and running and I'll pay you back."

"You did not get any money 'cause you cheated on him! He left you! You screwed around, and you screwed up!" Krissy shouted at her mom. "You could have asked! I might not be mad if you asked!" She screamed at her mom and ran for the stairs.

"Yes, I made a mistake. Everyone does, no one's perfect!" Her mother shouted back.

She stopped at the bottom of the stair case and turned around. "Not everyone cheats on their husband of 18 years with her best friend!" She told her mother and turned back around.

"Where are you going?" her mother asked.

"Max will be here soon. Some people don't brake commitments..." She said and turned back around. She started up the stairs crying.

"Okay but when you get back you need to start packing. We are leaving for Swan Valley in three days. "

"Swan Valley? You’re moving us to Swan Valley? My friends are here!" Krissy yelled back at her mom.

"Don't be dramatic. It's only fifty miles, besides we need to live at the hotel." Her mother rolled her eyes.

"Whatever...I need to get ready" Krissy rolled her eyes back, and continued up the stairs.

"You can borrow my money, Mommy." Jacob told her as he reached in the cookie jar to get some cookies his grandmother had baked earlier that day.

Rebecca smiled down at her son. "Thanks honey. Actually I do need to borrow some of your money too. We need to fix up the place."

Jacob smiled up at his mom, "No problem Mommy. And you know, Krissy will get over it." Jacob started eating his cookies.

Becca smiled at her son. She remembered when Krissy had been that young and agreeable. Now it seemed like they were always fighting. Becca hoped her son was right.
