An ear splitting screech shatters the cold air
Her breath is short, each gasp expelling a piece of her soul,
The wheeze hanging as a frozen cloud
The hair on my neck springs from my skin
As the bushes take on an invisible weight
I beg her, tug on her stiffening body, will her to hold on
She coughs and a warm, sticky clot of blood flows down her cheek
The gash on her abdomen pulsates and shakes along to the rhythm of her dying heart
I hear the gurgle of her lungs filling up
The monster cries longingly for another taste of her flesh
I plead for our immediate evacuation but her death rattle is all that responds
Her glossy eyes stare aimlessly off into the night, holding only pain and fear now
Another bone splintering crunch pulls me away from her lifeless figure
My will to live and move on without her
Freezes over as I let go of her now icy arm
The monster's snickers lock around my body, petrifying me
A flash of blistering white teeth and I lay helplessly next to her
Pain engulfs my brain, warm blood oozes, mixing with the earth
My breathing becomes short and rapid as I fight against death's chilling grip
The monster looms over my limp body, mouth dripping with saliva
"Wake up," it hissed, "you're going to be late for school."
