Blaire

The cool wind blows in my face as I make it to the finish line. My legs are burning and my chest is heaving, but the adrenaline within me takes over everything. I couldn't hear my teammates or the crowd cheering, it was just me and the race.

Just a little bit more, Blaire. Keep going! You're almost there!

I start to speed up to the other runner who is in first place, closing the distance between us. We're less than 50 meters away from the finish line when I come neck to neck with the other girl. I could feel the victory building up through me and I know that I still got a chance.
I glance over at the runner and I could sense that she's tired, but not giving up just yet.

30 meters left...

20 meters left..

That is when I give all that I have left and sprint to the finish line. I could hear the fastened footsteps of the runner as I pass her and try to maintain my speed.

Is she catching up to me?

How far away is she behind me?

Will she pass me?

Worry starts to fill my mind and I want to look behind me so badly, but I decided against it because that would only slow me down.

It felt as if the moment was in slow motion, when I felt the ribbon break against my tired body as I stepped across the line. Once I slowed to a stop, I put my hands behind my head to help slow down my breathing. I turned around to my competitor and saw that she was in the same position as me.

"Good race! That was a pretty close one," I said as I approached her and shook her hand.

"Thanks, I didn't know you were that fast!" The girl said with a little bit of shock and amazement in her eyes.

"I thought the same abo-"

"BLAIRE!"

I turn around and see my best friend, Lexi, make her way to me. She is wearing a white shirt, black high waisted shorts, and red vans. Her hair is in a braid and her sunglasses are hanging off the front of her shirt. Overall, I thought she looked pretty cute.

We've been best friends since 2nd grade. I moved here from Wisconsin on a sunny day in July when Lexi and her parents came to our house to welcome us to the neighborhood. They lived a couple houses down from ours. When I first saw her, I was instantly jealous of her hair. She had wavy, dirty blonde hair while I had just straight, dark brown hair. At first, we didn't get along; we actually hated each other! But after the forced dinners and hangouts that our parents would bring us to, we started getting along. Throughout the remainder of the summer, we started getting together more. And now, going through our last year in high school, we are best friends and inseparable. I guess if it wasn't for our parents, we wouldn't have been best friends today.

I waved goodbye to the girl (I forgot to ask her her name) and made my way over to Lexi. Before I could stop her, she gave me a huge hug, making me feel number 1- Grosser, and number 2- More self-conscious on how smelly and sweaty I am.

"Lexi, don't hug me, I'm covered in sweat right now!" I exclaimed, but she just laughed and released me.

"You did great, B! I wish I could run like that, but you know I would rather run to the fridge than run to the finish line." I laughed at the remark that she would always tell me after a race.

Once I grabbed my stuff from the field, Lexi and I started heading to the parking lot where her car was. I put my bag into her trunk and got into the car. We started to drive off to our favorite restaurant, Skyline Diner, where we always go every Friday night. Their fries and shakes are the best that I ever had! And that means a lot, since I'm pretty picky about my food.

Little did I know that he was watching me...
