"Knock, Knock"
A shadow crept into view between the crack at the base of the purple door and the hardwood floor.
"Knock, Knock, Knock."
Now, the shadow looked somewhat annoyed.
"Carlie WAKE UP, mums downstairs with pancakes! It's your birthday for goodness sake!" yelled the shadow.
"Whaaa," mumbled Carlie as she wiped her tangled hair away from her sleepy eyes.
Bundled in her fluffy pj's, she tumbled off her cozy bed with the grace of a dizzy wombat. On her way down she bonked into her wooden dressing table grazing her elbow. "Oww!" she yelped rubbing her pink stinging skin.
Suddenly her big jade eyes snapped open. Sweet maple syryp and buttery scents awoke her senses and as if under a spell she rose up from her splayed position on the floor.
She could smell pancakes, her favorite. She quickly dressed in her usual red scarf, leather jacket and chocolate beanie. Glancing in the mirror she checked what she was wearing, not wanting a repeat of the day before, when she'd gone a whole day before noticing her shirt was inside out.
Her lips drooped into a frown. In all her rushing she had forgotten to put on her necklace.
She walked over to her desk and removed a necklace from a small velvety box.
It was a smooth circle of cool sapphire decorated with a ring of silver that snaked around the hollow stone. The necklace was held together with clasps at the back, like a locket. Unfortunatly, most likely due to poormanufacturing, the necklace refused to release, despite the many times she tried to open it.
As she put it around her neck, she began to read the words etched onto the back of the stone,"I love you. May this bring you luck...
"'Yeah right!"thought Carlie as waves of heat washed over her face turning her cheeks to the colour of cherries.
She didn't believe those words at all, even if she wore the gift from her mum every day. To Carlie it was logic if her mum loved her she would not have left...
"Carlie come down!", squeaked her Aunty from down stairs.
She was snatched away from the thoughts,
I shouldn't worry about my mum when I have the best family down there, she thought.Despite that she never knew her mother and father, Carlie had experienced a wonderful and warm childhood. Her Aunty, a single mum of three young children, was her family and Carlie wouldn't have it any other way.
Her Aunty was a cheery, artsy lady who had filled her childhood with the most imaginative adventures, like hikes up forested mountains and starry camping trips by lakes.
She remembered the time they went camping at Foresters bay, her family had shared the night snug by a flickering fire, telling stories and toasting pillows of gooey marsh-mellows on long sticks.
She remembered that one afternoon when she and her three siblings (Katie, Dylan, Sara) had walked down to the cafe and sat by the windows eating cool, smooth ice creams while the sky sank from blue to gold to violet.
As Carlie thought all about how lucky she was to have such a beautiful family she felt warm and comforting as fresh tray of cinnamon cookies. She looked over at her clock 6:59am, and then began skipping happily down the stairs.
It was on her way down the hallway that her skipping stopped, and her joyful emotions slipped into terror.
A buzzing noise built up over her like a suffocating blanket. At first seemingly quiet but it grew more and more drowning until it felt like needles were splintering over every part of her body.
To describe it, she felt like it was being ripped apart at the centre like a crack was forming across her consciousness. Her lungs stopped working, while her lips grasped for air. She was suffocating.
The pain continued strengthening till she screamed, at least she tried to. The pain blocked her mouth from opening. She was paralysed in shock and fear everything was beginning to become blurry. What was happening.
Suddenly her world flashed black and white, colors flew away like birds. She was in complete darkness and all she could feel was pain.
She prayed a prayer to God.
Then it all stopped.
There was no more pain, no more noise and the world was no longer faded. Everything was back to the way it was before. She was in her ordinary hallway near the kitchen, everything was the same except......
She was numb; completely numb. She could not feel the soft wool of her socks or the smooth leather of her jacket. Her skin felt neither warm nor cold, and frankly it was weird.
Yet in that moment Carlie did not even recognize the numbness, for her mind was stuck in a standstill, not yet recovered from the unexplainable experience she had just endured.
Her whole body was trembling and her mind was racing. She could comprehend what had just occurred and in her state of panic she was jumping to the conclusions that scared her the most.
Was some form of a panic attack, or a mental episode, was she going crazy, was she going to die? Nothing seemed clear.
Shaking.
Trembling.
Hot tears.
She felt afraid and wanted someone to come over and make feel better. She longed for someone to wrap her up in a warm hug.
She screamed out, " Aunty Help!", as tears were rippled down from her jades eyes like silver knives cutting along her pale cheeks.
" I just felt the most pain I have ever felt in my life! Help. I just need help!!", she cried hysterically.
But her Aunty wasn't responding and Carlie was mortified. She was speaking loudly and the panic was clear in her voice.
She took a few deep breathes and tried to calm herself down, 'it will all be ok' she whispered to herself. 'It will be ok'
"Aunty please come over here i need your help i am not feeling well!" she yelled out this time much more calmly.
But their was no reaction.
