"Mom! I'm home!" Henry called as she kicked the door behind her.
She shrugged her empty bag off her shoulder and dumped it next to the fridge. Grabbing a slice of cake out, she set up her tea set and boiled the water. She slumped in the chair, exhausted from her day.
"You're later than usual, Alexandra," Mom chastised as she stepped down the stairs.
Henry groaned and rested her head against the dining table. "You wouldn't believe the day I've had. Mom, I've been called a slut, a tramp, a whore, a bitch, and God knows what else with their limited and miniscule vocabulary. I think Roserie declined me because of my name, even though I had my photo on my form. So you know what happened? I got sent to a boys' school! A boys' school! The guys there are furious with me even though it's not even my fault."
Mom poured the hot water into the tea pot and added three spoons of honey, stirring while lost in thought. She took Henry's favourite tea cup out of china cupboard and watched the honey and water mixture pour into the cup, the steam rising up in thin wisps.
"Do you want to move, Sweetie? We'll still be fine if you do," she said softly.
Henry looked up from her arms. "I'm not going to move yet. I'll see how it weighs. Besides, the guys there are hot."
"Are you sure?" Mom looked at her.
"Mhm. I'm gonna make history there, Mom. I know it," Henry smiled. Then she frowned and sighed. "Oh yeah, they stole my books. Eff them to H. I'm going to sneak extra-small sized condoms into their bags and ruin their dignity."
Mom laughed. "You're so much like your father. Looks and mannerisms."
"Except I have your eyes. It's official. I'm the genderbend version of Harry Potter. All I need is a know-it-all and a ginger, a madman out to kill me, and a wand.," she rolled her dark green eyes.
"Henry," Henry rolled her eyes. "Why not James? Eustace? Or even Horace? Better yet, Percy?"
She giggled. "He was just so sure that you were going to be a boy that he refused any other name. It was the name of his best friend."
Henry snorted. "And why'd you choose Alexandra for me?"
"Because it's such a kick-ass name. You know it is," Mom grinned.
"Whatevs," she flipped her hair. "I'll be in the backyard if you need me."
Henry stood up and pushed her chair in, watching as her mother did the same. She wrapped her arms around her, squeezing tightly.
"Thanks, Mother," she said, muffled.
Mom ruffled her hair and returned her squeeze. "It's fine. Go and play while I make dinner, alright?"
"Mhm!"
Henry clambered onto the trampoline, and jumped as high as she could. She fell into her normal pattern of flips and elaborate tricks mid-air. As she jumped, she could see Mrs Oak, in the house behind, cooking dinner. The air was already chilly and it was dark now, but her lights stood out and illuminated her.
Oreo, her Dalmatian and Golden Retriever mix, barked.
"Yeah, I guess you're right, Oreo," Henry said as she stopped bouncing. Oreo rested up against the ledge of the trampoline. "Let's head, back, yeah?"
God, I really have no clue if I even want to go again tomorrow.
