Chapter 6
So, the week is pretty much the same - going to training, eating, and sleeping. I don't really spend time with other tributes except for Willow and Percy. At lunch, all the tributes eat in a big lunch room. The pack of Career Tributes are always sitting at one table talking, laughing, and gives other tributes rude glances every once in a while. The rest of us sit scattered around at other tables. We don't interact what-so-ever since it's just awkward to act like friends, then be thrown into an arena trying to kill one another.
It turns out that I am not good at anything except knives. When I preform in front of the game makers I'll at least get a 5. The careers usually get high scores like 7-10. On the last day of training it finally is time for lunch. The tributes will be called by district 1-12 to have their private training session with the Game makers. We get 15 minutes instead of 30 this year since the quarter quell has called for twice as many tributes.
1 by 1 the tributes get up to go. Then, after what seems like forever, I hear "Haymitch Abernathy. It is time for your session." come from the loudspeaker.
"Good luck!" says Maysilee.
"Thanx." I answer. When i walk into the gym, the game makers are sitting in their bleachers. They look to be eating their own lunch. One of them, who is wearing a more detailed robe that symbolizes the head game maker, stands. "Hello Haymitch. i'm Seneca Crane the head game maker. Please begin." He says.
I walk over to my knife station and show them what I can do. I lunge, show them my battle styles, even chop a dummy in half. Before I know it, I hear Seneca Crane say "Haymitch Abernathy, you are dismissed." and i leave.
Later, at dinner, Babylon asks "So what did you guys present to the game makers?" Neither one of us answers because we are so lost in the roast duck. But then Annabell says "Haymitch, you first." I give a groan since I have to stop eating. I want to start eating again so soon that I quickly say "Knife. What did you do?" I ask Maysilee.
"I ran." she says.
"Well we can see your scores tonight." says Annabell. Ran. Really? She wants to impress the game makers by running.Stupid. Full of stupidity. But I just shrug because I think it will be funny when she gets something around 0.
When we are done eating, we head to a living room with a large T.V. The scores are shown on screen by a flashing number under a picture of each tributes face. The scores start from district 1-12. Predictably high scores for 1,2, and 4. Sparkle and mascara get 9s. Percy gets a 6 but Willow gets a 3.
Now they are coming to 12. The other 2 tributes from our district got low scores like usual. But my mouth drops when Maysilee gets a 6. How fast did she run? But while I am dwelling on this thought, I don't see right away why Maysilee is snickering. I look back up at the scree and see my face. Like looking in a mirror. But the number under my face is a 1. Oh, but it's not that funny. This means that I will not be getting sponsors in the arena.
