Chapter 8

For about 15 seconds I'm in complete darkness. Then, for a moment, I'm blinded by the sudden light. When My eyes adjust, I open them wide with surprise. I'm in the most beautiful and breathtaking place imaginable. The giant, golden cornucopia sits in the middle of a green meadow with gorgeous patches of flowers. The sky is azure blue with puffy, white clouds. Bright songbirds flutter overhead making wonderful sounds. The place smells fantastic! I see some of the other tributes sniffing with their mouths wide open in awe. The meadow stretches for miles to my right and left. Far behind me is a woods, and far ahead of me is a snow-capped mountain.

I suddenly realize what this place is supposed to to do at first sight. The game makers designed this to disorient us, to distract us. I quickly forget about my surroundings and focus.Half of the tributes look like they are in some kind of beautiful dream. They'll probably be the first ones dead. But what amazes me the most is the amount of tributes. I never imagined a field of 48 would look this big. We are standing on our metal plates in a circle. Each tribute is about 5 feet away from each other. We stand in about a 30 to 50 yard radius around the cornucopia.

The mouth of the cornucopia is spilling over with supplies of anything you could need - food, water, weapons, medicine and packs that could have just about anything inside them. There are some supplies scattered around the cornucopia as well. But the closer to the cornucopia, the more valuable the supplies gets.

I have 60 seconds until we can start. If you step off your plate before the 60 seconds is over, the land mine blows you sky high. So, here is my plan. I'll be fast, and run in and grab a couple things and head for the woods. Not much of a plan but at least I'm not completely winging it.

BONG! The gong sounds and I dart straight into the supplies. I scoop up a blue pack, very quickly stuff it with a jacket, some rope, a couple water bottles, a small sword, and a container with some food in it. I get up to dash for the woods when thought hits me. I forgot a knife! I scan the supplies desperately for one. I spot a box with a nice array of some knives. Right when I reach for it, I see a girl, standing about a foot in front of me, spear in hand, poised to throw. Oh no. I should have ran when I had the chance!

But just as she raises her arm, some one else lodges a knife in her neck. She drops down to the ground, dead. I grab my box and sprint for the woods. I'm sure nobody is chasing me but I run as fast as I can anyway. I have to get as far as I can between me and the other tributes. I keep on running.

Once i reach the edge of the woods, I take a quick look behind me. I must have been extremely fast because some of the tributes havn't even stepped off their plates yet. The fighting just started. Blood covers some of the flowers and fresh grass. Some of the fighters have missing limbs.

I hope Maysilee got out of there safely. Oh, and Percy and Willow also. But under all the blood and gore, I can't tell who anybody is. I keep moving. At first I run, but then slow down into a steady jog. After about and hour of alternating between running and walking, the foliage gets too thick. I tell myself it's ok to take a quick break when I get out a knife so I can slash through the leaves and branches.

I'm so thankful that the water bottles already contain water. I take a couple sips and open the box of knives. There are 3 inside, each one highly decorated. One of them is serated, like a saw. The second one is long and slim, but ends in a deadly sharp point. The third is a medium sized one with a curve at the end. I pick the long one for slashing through the foliage.

Once I'm ready to start walking again, I notice my surroundings. This woods has colorful, luscious fruit dangling from tree branches. Crystalined streams. Dazzling butterflies. But something doesn't seem right. I see no animals consuming any of the food sources. It actually seems like they are trying to stay away from the food and water. I'm guessing everything is poisonous.

I hear a BOOM! At first I'm surprised but then remember it's just the cannon shot. Each shot represents a dead tribute. The fighting at the cornucopia must have finally stopped because, on the first day, they do the shots after the fighting stops because it's just too hard to keep track of all the fatalities. I look back. The careers have headed to the mountain.

BOOM! Another cannon. They shoot off, one by one. I count each shot. Once the shots have ended, my face goes pale. I counted 18 in all.
