Then
As always, I heard Seth before I actually saw him. "Did you get a new haircut, Mrs. Rollins?" he schmoozed his way past my mother as she giggled and fluffed at her hair. Throwing another smile over his shoulder, he met me at the top of the stairs and followed me back into my room.
"You're disgusting." I muttered.
He smiled back, that cute one corner lift to his lips that I loved so much. "It takes a steady diet of flattery to get a mom to let you hang out alone in her daughter's bedroom."
I wondered fleetingly how many other mothers he'd employed this technique on, but quickly stopped that train of thought. Probably lots more than I would ever want to know about.
That grin still on his face, he flopped onto my bed.
And then the room exploded.
At least that's what it felt like. I heard him curse as he flung himself towards me, trying to shield me from the glass flying around the room and the books falling off my shelves above my head. He let out a string of phrases that would've made a sailor blush as he tackled me to the floor, letting the weight of his body crush me. It lasted only a few seconds, the walls shaking, everything shattering - and then the noise. The ear-piercing noise that seemed to shake the room worse than a bomb.
"What the hell?" I struggled to roll over so I could look over Seth's shoulder at what was happening in my room. Instead I was met with a grunt from him and a large, callused hand over my mouth.
"Shhh." I felt Seth's breath against my ear, and all the blood rushed to my toes when I heard the fear in his voice. We were partially hidden between my bed and my dresser, but if there was someone else in the room with us, it wouldn't take long for them to find us. "Get under the bed." Seth hissed, pushing me towards the depths of under-the-bed-land that hadn't been cleaned since probably ever.
"Amy!" I heard my mom's pounding at my bedroom door. The doorknob rattled as she tried to push through, the blast having knocked the door partway off the hinges and preventing her from getting it open. "Amy! Are you okay?" She screamed. I felt her fear all the way from here. I tried to peek up around my bed again towards my window where the commotion seemed to be happening. Seth's hand landed on my head and pushed me back towards the bed. I tried to push him aside, but for the first time ever, he actually pushed me back. Hard. His eyes met mine, brighter than I'd ever seen them, and frantic. "Go. Please, Amy." With a final shove, he stood up, facing my window.
