Walking out of the gates with my bag thumping against my back as I picked up my pace, I watched as a group of friends in front of me stopped at the traffic light before crossing the road and turning right towards the mall. The only good thing about this school was that they let you out for lunch if you wanted to eat out. Other than that, this place was a hell hole.

Tyler, my twin brother, had decided to act sick and stay home today. Since neither of us had ever actually 'acted' sick, if we ever did do it, it was likely that Monica would fall for it and let us stay home. Monica got married to my dad not long after my mother left us. She left behind a note for Tyler and I on my pillow before she ran away.

"Ma'am, you going on the bus?" I looked up to see an old man sitting at the bus stop bench, a walking stick held tight in his hand.

        "Yes, um, sir."

"Well, it should be here any second now," he said, as the bus turned the corner, slowing down as it reached the bus stop we were currently at. "Ah, here it is."

As soon as the doors to the bus opened, I hopped up and into the bus, handing the bus driver the right amount of money, before sitting at a random isle seat. There weren't that many people on the bus, considering it was only 12:50am.

Jumping off the step of the bus and onto the sidewalk, I looked both ways before walking in the direction of my house. Pushing my hand deeper into my pocket, I pressed my hand against the cold metal of the key, making sure it was still there. Turning around the corner, I pick my pace up as I spot the familiar red door. The rest of the doors on our street were brown, but when Monica moved in she felt like the house needed to stand out and be 'different'.

Pulling out the key from my pocket, I run up the few steps that lead up to our door, slotting the key into the keyhole. I look around me before opening the door, although I know no one in this neighbourhood is around for another few hours.

"Ty, I'm home," I call out, shutting and locking the front door behind me.

"Here," Tyler calls out before two blue duffel bags come flying down the stairs, landing not so far from where I was standing. "I added everything that was on the 'Last Minute List' after Mon and dad left for work. Got the bags ready at the kitchen table. Everything that you told me is in them," he said, motioning towards where our two back-packs lay, side-by-side on the kitchen counter.

        "Camera?"

        "In there."

        "Phones?"

        "Done."

        "Wallets?"

        "Check."

        "Tickets and passports?"

        "Yup."

        "Chargers?"

        "Back pocket of my bag."

        "Snacks?"

"Our favourites. They're in your bag."

Nodding my head in his direction, I turned away from him and headed towards the kitchen, double checking the bags just in case.

"Don't trust me?" He asks, following me into the kitchen and watching as I unzip the bags.

"You know I do, Ty. Your memory just sucks."

Snorting at my remark, he shakes his head, a grin on his face. I zip up his bag and turn towards him, a smile on my face as well. Walking towards the drawer beside the fridge, I open it and pull out a piece of paper and a pen. Monica believed that you should have one drawer in each room with stationary for emergencies; this was the first time we'd every used it. Uncapping the pen, I scratched out a short message to whoever would come home first. Taking the house keys out of my pocket, I laid them beside the note and motioned for Tyler to do the same.

"Alright, Liv, let's ditch this place," Tyler says as he places his keys down beside mine.

"That's the spirit," I yell, laughing as we swing our duffel bags over our shoulders in unison.

Making our way to the front door, I unlock the door from the inside, opening it and turning my back towards it as I take in one last look at our house.

"We'll be okay Liv. It's you and I against the world," Ty whispers, kissing my temple before walking out of the house.

Walking out after him, I let the door bang shut behind me and walk side-by-side with Tyler into the world.
