The first half of the school day was uneventful and went seemingly smooth, this was true up until lunchtime in which Iris and Drew, who had both returned from their geography field trip, thought it would be fun to sign us up to prep and organise house fair.

'Oh come on guys,' Drew pleaded, 'it's going to be fun and we get to have all the-'

'Left over cakes and treats,' interrupted Iris excitedly.

I rolled my eyes, typical of them two to be in it for free food and in fact I was surprised that they hadn't suggested it earlier.

'Okay say we do this, wouldn't we need to sign up with the house captains who organise the fair?' I pushed around the peas on my plate with a fork, 'I mean isn't it already full already, they put the notice up in the common room ages ago.'

Drew and Iris's eyes lit up with excitement, 'That's the best part,' said Drew, 'there are 5 places available because those doing AS level art have a controlled assessment which they have to prepare for in their frees. And Erin said it's fine and she wo-'

'Wait, hold up Erin Ford' blurted Elliot suddenly looking interested and intrigued.

Drew's mouth split into a huge smile, 'Yup that's the one, you know her?'

'Yeah she's my chemistry partner' said Elliot offhandedly, his thoughts obviously elsewhere and from his expression it was clear he was thinking of numerous scenarios which involved him, Erin and house fair.

'Um, so is she a house captain?' He said trying to act nonchalant.

'Yup' replied Drew, 'for Meriden.'

'Oh I didn't know,' he replied still evidently deep in thought.

'So, you up for it?' enquired Iris, her expression was hopeful.

'Yes,' I replied quickly trying spare him the embarrassment of seeming too eager, 'what days do we have to help out?'

'Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays for four weeks' said Iris.

'I can make it only 2 out of the 3 days, is that fine?'

'It's fine, what about you El?'

'Yeah, its fine.' He said and from his straightened posture and the hopeful glint in his eyes it was obvious that inside he was bursting with joy but was trying desperately to keep it concealed. My stomach clenched with jealously and again my mind was plagued with the thought that I could never make him as happy as Erin did he.

'Marina,' said Iris waving a perfectly manicured hand in front of my face, 'who pissed in you cereal this morning, you alright honey?'

I was pulled back from my reverie and cast her a soft smile, 'No, its fine just stressed about the December mocks.'

She leaned back in her chair and sighed exasperatedly, 'I know right, and that's not the worst of it! The topics we're being assessed on now are barely a bloody quarter of the syllabus, knowing that scares the daylight out of me.'
