Their room is simple, monotone to the decorative pillows along the sofa. The walls are white, no silly or funny quotes that people have in their homes. They were alone; living in an abandoned part of town. Overgrown hedges and flowerbeds laced the town, no one cared anymore. There weren't many people left to care. Shops left open. The alarms for them have stopped as the batteries are dead. The contents of them untouched. Hoards walk the streets of Trin. Human corpses remain in piles and scattered around.
This was the life of demon hybrid, Ryder Heap.
He was sitting on the edge of his bed when a large thud came from the corridor. Ryder sat in silence. Another thud and breaking of wood. Shit! He shifted to behind the sofa pistol in hand, getting a clear view of his door. "There has got to be something in the fucking flat block!" Someone yelled. Their voice was rough, almost a growl. More thudding and breaking noises. They broke through the door, shattering it into pieces. Ryder immediately hold the pistol in front of the intruders. "Woah... H-Hey the-there." They said, their voice almost a whisper.
"Name...Now!" Ryder shouted. His pistol aimed for their head. They stumbled over words but that was to be expected of them, they were at gun point. "I-It's Ca-Caleb. This is Robin and she's D-Dennie." Ryder lowered his pistol, running his hand through his hair. Caleb was shaking violently. His breath was rapid. Robin walked up to Caleb calmly, placing a hand on his shoulder. "It's okay Caleb. Calm remember?" Robin cooed gently to him. Ryder stood there looking confused. What was this? Why is he helping him? "What's your name? We told you ours." Dennie snapped. Ryder took a cigarette from his pocket and placed it between his lips. "Ryder." He answered, "Caleb needs a bit of help. Medically of course. Robin too" Caleb's dark eyes grew wide with worry.
"H-How did you k-know?" His words failing him.
"The way you held your gun Caleb." Ryder stated, "Your wrist. It's sprained, most likely from a landing." Caleb nodded. "Robin you've got a slash along your left arm. It'll be infected soon."
"Sit down then and roll your sleeve up." Ryder chirped, sauntering over to the kitchen.
"What can you do to help him?" Dennie barked. Ryder was getting really sick of her now.
"Look missy! I am a lot older than you and I have more experience. I am also a doctor so," Ryder stopped and took the cigarette out of his mouth. "If you'd like to shut your mouth and let me attend to your friends so they don't die in this forsaken world and leave you to die alone." She fell silent. Robin joined Caleb on the sofa, both rolling their sleeves up past the elbow. "Woah... You're a hybrid?" Ryder asked, as he stared at the wing unfolding from Caleb's arm.
"I'm sorry. I'll leave." Caleb murmured, pulling his sleeve down and staring to stand.
"Nope." Ryder pulling on his other wrist. "I'm attending to that wrist." Caleb was confused. Why hadn't Ryder hated him? Why didn't Ryder want him to leave?
After attending to Robin and Caleb and talking about the past, Ryder handed them medical supplies and food. "There. You can leave now. Don't let the do-. Never mind." His voice trailed off. Caleb threw a glance at Dennie. She scowled at him. "Want to join us?" Caleb chirped. Ryder stilled. Join them? They wanted him to join them? He began to laugh. "Why would you want me to join? You've know me for 2 hours. Hardly anything to go on." He turned and started to put away the med kit. "Well I think you should." Robin spoke up, "You've helped us even when we bro- well Dennie broke down your door. You saw that Caleb was a hybrid and you didn't run or tell him to leave. What kind of life do you have living alone in this flat?"
Ryder suddenly appeared in Robin's face, "You know nothing about me! I only help those who need it and don't think. Not even for a second that I am a good person 'cause you haven't seen the stuff I have done to people like her." Ryder seethed, pointing at Dennie. When everything fell silent, Ryder moved from Robin's face back to the kitchen. Robin let his breath go, that he didn't know he was holding.
The three mumbled and murmured for a moment. Ryder finished in the kitchen, he was just about to get something to eat when he remembered he actually had company so he couldn't. A loud crack sounded as a hatchet landed in the wood frame next to Ryder. "So tell us. What are we missing?" Dennie asked, her voice low and threatening. "You don't want to know." Was Ryder's reply. The Little missy walked over to the hatchet, Ryder not moving a muscle as she did so. She pulled it out of the woodwork and held it to Ryder's throat, pinning him against the kitchen work top. "Tell us." she snarled. Ryder smiled, an eerie smile that would have made a child cry and run for their mother. "Move that hatchet any further and you'll find out." Ryder's voice was weak but daring. Dennie pulled away, her glare fixed on Ryder's neck.
Her eyes were filled with horror. "Dennie what's wro-...ng?" Robin lost his words as he saw Ryder standing up slowly, his throat slit open. No blood poured from it. "I told you. You know nothing about me. I'm a hybrid. A demon hybrid. So if you want to kill me you've got no chance." Ryder said, running his thumb over the cut, healing it. The skin re-attaching and closing over the wound as if it had never happened, "As I was saying. Why would you want me on your team?" He sat on the work surface of the kitchen, averting his eyes out the window. "Anyway it's night. Unless you want to be killed by the hoards. I suggest staying here.". "Why should we stay here?!"Dennie immediately snapped back at Ryder. Her fists clenched "If you don't you and your friends are going to be a hoards midnight snack." Ryder said back, his voice stern.
Caleb at this point had sneaked into Ryder's room, not wanting to hear anything. What is he? He said that we didn't know what he was. So what is he? Glancing around, it was all white. There was a bookcase on the far wall, almost over spilling with books. Picking some of them up and reading the covers. The bed looked almost untouched, as if it had been bought yesterday. As Caleb stepped around the floor creaked. Everything fell silent.
