Lucy cried all night. Her nerve racking sobs echoing throughout the hospital corridors as Natsu held her. His face buried in her neck. His soft breathing and soothing words lulling her; calming her. Soon the cries dulled to whimpers and she was fast asleep in his arms. Her eyes dried red and nose running. Natsu adjusted her in his arms as he slowly got to his feet. Lucy sleepily tightened her arms around his neck. He grunted and lifted her up. Then carefully, he pushed open the door of Layla's room and left.

As Natsu gently placed Lucy down in the passenger seat of his convertible he heard her give out small cries. Her small voice calling out to her now deceased mother. "Mama..." She cried. Natsu ground his teeth together. It wasn't fair. Not any of it. Lucy's mother, his father. Why was the world so cruel? Why? He felt something wet trickle down his cheek. A tear. As he jumped into the drivers seat and started up his vehicle. The slow rumbling vibrating through the seat, he leaned forward and placed a chaste kiss on her cheek. His lips lingering on her skin. She shifted in her seat. Her eyelids fluttering at his contact. "Natsu...?"

He blinked. "Hey Luce..." She cupped his cheek and leaned in. Her pale lips crushed against his. He grasped the back of her head to deepen the kiss. They parted, breathing uneven. Lucy's eyes glazed with warmth. Natsu pulled her close, his forehead resting against hers. "Lucy...I promise. I promise I'll be there. I promise I'll protect you. I—I promise!" He said. His voice quivering. She cried. Her shoulders shuddering. Her hand clasped around his. Natsu nuzzled her gently. He leaned back in his seat as the engine tumbled to life, his convertible making it's way out onto the open road. Red tail lights flashing as they left the parking lot.

The moon was bright overhead as Natsu turned off the engine. He turned to Lucy. Her chest rising and falling softly. Sighing, Natsu got out and scooped her up in his arms. Lucy whined slightly. Her lashes flickering. "Where are...we?" She whispered. Natsu let out a deep breath as he answered.

"My place." Lucy's eyes widened. She shifted again. Her torso turning in his muscled grip. Natsu smirked at her wonder as he carried her up to the porch. It was a large house. Weatherboard. Dark blue; with white rafters. He struggled to pull out his key and jam it into the lock. The blonde giggled. Her eyes shining sadly. A faint glimmer of happiness in them. As he pushed open the door. Lucy slipped out from his grasp. Startled, he closed the door behind him to see her skip out to the lounge. He rounded the corner to find her snuggled up in a fleece blanket on the armchair near the bookshelf. Her small hands peeking out from beneath the fabric.

"Oh no you don't." Natsu chuckled pulling the blanket away. She yelped as he gathered up again, biceps rippling from her weight. She pressed her palms against his tanned chest. A small smile making it's way onto her face. He carried her through the hallway to a door at the end. "My room." Lucy twisted to face him, a knowing look on her features. She wagged her index finger in his face.

"Why should I? It isn't proper to share a room with a boy." She laughed. He grumbled and shoved open the door; throwing her onto the bed. "Eek!" Natsu's brows furrowed. He smirked again and tossed her a white T-shirt with the words, 'dragon slayer' on it. Holding up, she let a little snicker out at his everlasting childishness. He scowled. His cheeks turning the same hue of spiky locks atop his head. "Turn around!" She pouted. A grin wove itself into his lips, his hands planted on his hips. He raised a brow.

"Why should I?" He mimicked in a scratchy high pitched voice. Lucy frowned and blushed. She crossed her arms in defence.

"I don't sound anything like that!" She scoffed. Natsu chuckled.

"Yeah you do."

"Don't!"

"You're right..." He purred crawling onto the mattress, his arms framing her halo of blonde hair that pooled beneath her shoulders as she leant back. "You sound much more," he continued breathing down her collarbone. "...like this!" He pinched her waist earning a shriek from her. She jumped; startled as realisation set in. Her punches didn't hurt much but Natsu feigned pain as each blow landed on his chest. He gave a dramatic cough and fell back onto the white sheets. Lucy crawled up to him, looking down at him with a victorious smile. Her pearly whites shining in the light. Natsu chuckled.

The mattress creaked as she fell back into the jumble of fluffy pillows. Natsu gave her a toothy grin and got up. His tufts of spiky salmon coloured hair disappearing into the dark hallway. The door clicked and Lucy sighed. She slowly pulled off her clothes, a blue blouse and white skirt. Slipping into the oversized T-shirt. She shuddered; a cold breeze riding up her spine. The lights of headlights flashing through the cream curtains as cars zoomed by. Lucy slumped back into the cushioned bedcover. Her golden hair flaring out around her.

"Why? Why did papa have to go? Doesn't he even know about mama?..." She cried. Her hands fisted in Natsu's shirt. It smelt like cinnamon mixed with ashes. And somehow, it was comforting. She buried her nose into the crisp fabric. Suddenly the door opened to reveal Natsu. His emerald irises wide. He slowly walked over to Lucy and wrapped his arms around her. Lucy let the tears slip free down her cheeks as his warm embrace surrounded her. Natsu breathed out soft words; his fingers combing through her long blonde tresses.

"Hey Luce?" He asked pulling away. She looked up with doe eyes. Her lips pulled in a pout. Another car flew past. The lights flying past in a red blur. A second passed. Natsu glanced away, scratching his neck nervously. "Uh..."
Lucy frowned and tugged at his spikes. "Do ya' wanna...um still sleep here?" He murmured sheepishly. Lucy smiled.

"Yeah. No funny business." She laughed. Natsu grinned and nodded. Carefully, they pulled up the covers and stretched out. Natsu's long limbs draping around Lucy's waist as she snuggled closer. "Natsu?" He blinked and turned off the light.

"Yeah Luce?" He answered. His grip tightened around her. She beamed up at him in the darkness. Her small hands pressed against his broad chest. Her breath tickled his skin.

"Thank you..." She said softly.

"For what?" Natsu replied. His breath husky.

"For being there." She said. Her hands curling slowly into fists. She relaxed.

"I'll always be there Luce." He said. His hands rubbing soothing circles into her skin. "...always."
