I got the idea for this short story from the song listed before this chapter. I am in a bookclub and we were told we could create a story from a song. So this isn't an entry, but I wanted to upload it on here anyway, because my inspiration for this is from a holiday that hit Australia today. April 25th, ANZAC day, (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Is a day where all of Australia unites as we remember all our troops. All those brave soldiers who fought for our beautiful land, for our lives. For our freedom. Now, if anyone knows me, they know how much I adore my country, so it wouldn't come as a surprise that I sat down with a beer and listened to an "Aussie Anthems" playlist. A song came on, a song I have known my entire life. But hearing the song, on this day, it struck something within me, and this was the result, it tells the story of a soldier who fought in the Vietnam war and I would love to recreate it.
Thank you. Thank you for fighting for us. Thank you for your bravery. Thank you for our freedom of our wonderful country.
Now, if you also know me, you will know that Australian's have some 'weird words or sayings' so I am going to put the meanings to some words here for you guys. I could change it.. But I would like to keep this as Australian and as close to the real song as I can. I will also add in any Army slang that you may not know.
Channel Seven - An Australian television news channel.
Contact - A word to indicate contact with the enemy. Will also contain the direction, ie, "contact left, contact front."
Dustoff - Casualty evacuation by helicopter.
Greens - Field uniform of the Australian Army between the early 1960's and 1989.
Chinook - Military helicopter.
Light green - Parts on a map which are supposedly more dangerous for soldiers to patrol as there was little dense foliage and cover, an area was also more likely to have mines.
Nui Dat - A Village in Southern Vietnam, also the main base of 1 Australian Task Force from 1965 to 1972.
Puckapunyal - Former Army enlisted soldier recruit training centre, located in Victoria.
Canungra - Jungle warfare training centre in South-East Queensland, Gold Coast.
Shoalwater - Military exercise area in Queensland.
Vung Tau - Coastal city in Southern Vietnam which was both the main Australian logistic base and a rest ares for troops based in Nui Dat.
Slouch hat - Parade hat for the Australian Army.
SLR - (Self-Loading Rifle) A semi-automatic rifle issued to the Australian infantrymen during the Vietnam war.
Tinnies - Cans of beer.
Townsville - City in Queensland. Point where troops shipped off to Vietnam from all around Australia.
VB - Victoria Bitter (it's a beer)
In the song when it says, "Frankie kicked a mine" it means, Frankie stepped on a mine.
If anyone has any that I've missed, please let me know :)

Remember The ANZAC's
Short StoryThe story of a soldier in the Australian Army, based off of the song 'I was only 19.' This idea came about because of a bookclub contest, so while I haven't entered this in, I wanted to share it anyway.
