Today when she comes with the pills, Kendall manages to mumble a sentence when Binx pulls the tape from her mouth."I'll swallow them, don't force them down again."
She opens her mouth easily and Binx places the pills on Kendall's tongue before she holds a glass of water to Kendall's lips so she can wash them down. It feels like the first proper drink she has had since she has gotten here. She thinks that potentially it may be her last. Binx opens her mouth and inspects to make sure that she has swallowed them.
"How long have I been here, Binx?" Kendall asks.
"That doesn't matter anymore," she says and Kendall knows it must be over four days but she's not entirely sure how many days it has been. It could nearly be a week. She remembers the other man and for a split second she's a good detective again.
"Who is he? The man who lifted me? Where is he? I haven't seen him here for days. Have you killed him too?"
Binx raises her eyebrows like Kendall is talking absolute nonsense. "Sweetheart, you sound crazy. It was and always has been just us."
There's a silence between them and Kendall focuses on the room. Her throat and abdomen hurt, and swallowing has come a chore. The pain is intensely violent. She closes her eyes and thinks because there's nothing else left for her.
She's dying and she's almost content with it because it can't be any worse than this and she knows Binx won't leave her to die alone.
A smile graced Kendall's lips as she made her way into the office. She'd worked it out. Despite it being before six in the morning, the task force offices were abuzz with activity. It was always the same after a hard worked case was solved. She wondered if they had been like this when she had finally been found. She doubted it for some reason. She smiled as she thought of Gigi. Gigi whose parents had flown home early to get to her, Kendall had left them to it. It was only fair.
Cara shrugged her jacket over her shoulders. She wasn't needed at that moment, but she always liked to witness the end of a case when things were getting wrapped up. It gave her a sense of closure in the big picture. She patted Harry on the shoulder before she headed towards Kendall's office, she had seen her best friend walk past ten minutes ago.
"Good job yesterday, Cara," Kendall said as she stood at her doorway just about to close the door over.
"Do you want a lift home?" Cara offered. "You've had a long night and me and Harry are going home in a second anyway so we can drop you off if you want?"
Kendall shrugged before shaking her head gently. "I actually have a stop to make Cara."
"At this time of the morning?" Cara asked.
She had a feeling she knew where Kendall was going and she didn't know why. She had gone to see Binx Walton herself, in those first few days when Kendall was lying in hospital barely holding on to life.
Cara's bad profile on Binx Walton had stung and she thought she might learn something from the beautiful psychopath. But Binx had refused to talk to her. She'd sat silently in the interview room while Cara had peppered her with all sorts of questions. And then Cara had got up to leave and Binx had finally spoken.
Only one question. "Is Kendall still alive?"
"Kendall if you need to talk, you know I'm here for you right?"
Kendall played with something in her blazer pocket. "I probably do need to talk to someone, Cara."
"But let me guess, not with me?" There was a wry smile on Cara's face as she said it. She knew her best friend, but she also knew that this was progress. Kendall had never admitted that she needed to talk to someone. She made a mental note to tell Hailey.
