Arrabella:
I sat on the slippery rock and waited.
The sun was just dipping behind the vast expanse of black waves as I held the cold metal of his locket between my fingers.
He was supposed to come here.
He always did.
He was probably sleeping or lost...
I felt my heart tighten as I suggested the alternative.
I had been forgotten.
I ripped the chain from my neck as rejection burned through me.
The human man had been searching for me for three days now. He had finally given up.
Did I mean nothing to him at all?
Was I worth, only a few weak attempts at searching?
I hissed in anger and my palms throbbed as the metal clasp of the locket cut into my ivory skin. My fists wrapped tightly around it's small cold body.
I felt no release as I cried small tears. They turned into diamonds as the weak evening sun hit them; before they sunk to the blue depths below.
I had been hiding from him every time he came searching; only yesterday he had almost caught me. My tail still tingled as I remembered his strong warm hand brushing against it as I swam away from him.
I had planned to reveal myself today, But he had not come.
I brought my fist behind my head in preparation to throw the locket into the sea, but I couldn't do it.
Deflated, I brought the fist down to my lap and opened my fingers to reveal a long gash along my white palm.
I shut my eyes and let my fingers trail in the water.
"Come water..
Come sky..
Part ways to heal I...
Let your cold touch give me life...
Heal the wounds brought by this strife..."
I finished the healing song and opened my eyes as I watched the black water glow white and then golden. It traveled up my wrist and along my fingers, bubbles floated around the cut and I sang a long note too high for humans to hear in thanks to the ocean as it healed me.
I had been distracted by the process and did not hear the heavy breathing behind me.
"Its you."
The human man stood behind me, his eyes widened as he took in the scene.
A young girl, with long auburn hair that fell down her back in curls. Her green eyes widened in surprise and her pink pearl lips in an 'O' as she realised the danger she was in.
Her ice blue and ocean green tail shimmered in the weak sunset and cast patterns in the water and on the sea-rock, like emeralds.
I didn't move as I stared into his aqua eyes.
"I have to go.."
I whispered as I started to lower myself into the water, until my head was only visible above the waves.
I heard him scramble to the edge of the rock until he was leaing over the side. His face inches from mine.
"Please. Don't leave."
He sounded pained and I saw he had cut himself on the rocks in a bid to stop me from leaving.
"Your hurt."
My voice sounded odd to me. I realised it reacted differently to the dry air.
I was speaking human tongue.
He nodded and took a sharp intake of breath as his ankle scraped against the rock again.
"My ankle."
I swam to the other side of the rock and looked at it.
There was a large gash and I could see the red blood bleeding into the water, causing bile to rise up in my throat. Human blood has never agreed with us mermaids, despite folk tales that talk of us drowning the men at sea and eating them.
I bit my lip in concentration as I performed the healing process again. I swam around the rock to face him when it was over.
"How? How did you do that?"
I didn't reply but did the thing that had been on my mind ever since I first saw him.
His lips were soft and warm, his strong muscled arms pulled me from the water without breaking the kiss, and cradled me in his embrace.
I clasped my hands around his neck and deepened the kiss, my heart beating wildly in my chest, as he held me closer.
