Chapter 2

Although she had pictured this moment for years, nothing could have prepared her for the impact Janie felt in her gut when Silas E. Cadence recognized her. While her heart stuttered before, now it raced. A euphoric feeling filled her, excitement building up as she Silas's face transformed. None of the nights she spent in England, laying in her bed and fantasizing over this moment meant anything as she relished the feeling of warmth that flooded her veins. She felt seventeen again.

"Hi there." she gave a small smile. His mouth opened and closed, then opened again. No words came out. He ran his hands through his hair again, letting out a breath she hadn't known he was holding. "Wow. Tweety. What are you doing here?"

The warmth fled her veins, leaving her cold. It felt like her veins were filled with ice. The euphoric feeling left her, leaving her to face the reality. He didn't remember the promise. The highlight of her life and his life. Melody was right. He didn't care and he didn't remember. Janie held back the tears as she swallowed, her throat closing up. Clearing her throat, she dropped her eyes back to his mouth. His wicked lips, pale pink and somewhat way too beautiful. The ones she wanted to nibble on since she saw she moved next door to the lanky, shy teenage boy. She dropped her eyes to his chest.

"Oh, I was just in the neighborhood. That's all. Wanted to drop by and was hoping you'd want to see an old friend." she lied.

The smile that lit up his face almost took away all the pain. The same old two dimples winked back at her. Janie felt her knees wobble slightly as she saw the once shy, awkward smile turn into a full out sexy, panty dropping smile.

"Always, Tweety. Come on, lets sit down by the pool." He motioned her over to the pool where he sat down at the edges, rolling up his jeans and sticking his feet in. She followed and did the same.

"So, how have you been, Tweety?" he treated her to another one of his smiles. Janie felt melting into a puddle. "I've been great. I actually moved back to the U.S. and now I live in San Francisco."

"It's different huh?" He asked wistfully. Confused, she felt her eyebrows knit together.

"What is?"

"Living in the West coast." A tiny smile tugged up his lips. "Mom and Dad still live back East."

Janie recalled Mr. and Mrs. Cadence. Mrs. Cadence was a bubbly, skinny brunette that couldn't cook for her life. Her singing would flood through the kitchens as she attempted to cook dinner. The thing she really admired about Mrs. Cadence was that no matter if they still ordered take out at the end, Mrs. Cadence still tried to cook. It was admiring, really.

Mr. Cadence was a lot like Silas in terms of looks. He possessed the same stormy dark colbat blue eyes that faded as years passed, but were filled with adoration for Mrs. Cadence. She remembered hoping Silas would look at her like that. An avid listener of music, Mr. Cadence had taught Silas how to sing and play guitar, although the singing was a natural for Silas.

"How are they?" she asked. "It's been a while since I've seen them."

"They're great." he gave a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "But enough about me, how long are you in town for?"

"Well, I took out my vacation for work. I'm a photographer. I'm planning to head back home soon since I don't really have anything to do here. . . And I've finished what I came here for."

Telling Silas about the notebook wasn't a good idea. Not when he didn't even remember the promise. Silas stilled and became quiet. After a few moments, he perked up again but it seemed forced.

"Well, you should stay here. There's plenty of room and I don't want my old friend stuffed up in a fuckin' hotel room." He winked at her. Heart fluttering, she nodded. The motel was a far stretch from the mansion, and comfort won over as she accepted his offer. Secretly, she just wanted to be near Silas for a while before she headed back home. Wiping her damp palms on her thighs again, she gave him a shaky smile.
