¨Hey, it could be worse right, I mean we could be dead?" I said
¨We are pretty much fucking dead already bud" Sonya snapped at me.
My mind was racing with thoughts varying from 'we are all dead' to 'this is fine, we've had worse, this is fine'. I'm thinking that we can probably keep on as normal, but going home will never be an option for us. We will have to stay here, and use what we have around us to live.
"Guys this isn't the worst thing, alright. We are OK here at our cabin. We have supplies to last, and not many people live around here" I Added
"He has a good point, James and I have loved zombie movies since junior high, this is like a dream we always wanted to come true, only now I'm not so sure. " Meg added
She was right. I loved zombie movies. Even though they were all essentially the same with minor differences. There was once a really good TV show about it, I think it was called the walking dead or something like that. Shows like that and survivor man are what got me into survival, but my friends don't need to know that.
"What about Mom and Dad!" my brother said, with an extremely shaky voice.
"I could only get an email out, cell towers are busted by now. They may be back up in a day, if the power grid stays up. But I am almost certain there is some serious damage to the grid."
"Thankfully we have our solar grid." Greg said, the first thing he said since he heard the news. Everyone else had been talking among themselves.
My brother added "That is a good point, we should at least be able to keep some lights on with the solar, and keep our phones charged."
"I don't think that's what is important right now dude" Sonya added.
"She's right. What's important right now is we get ourselves set up for a long haul. We are going to have to ride this out." I said
Everyone agreed with me and seemed to calm down a bit. The TV was still on in the background, but it wasn't much for new information. The reporter just kept going on about how this is just like a movie, and how surreal it is. In fact, this is super surreal. I don't think it has really sunk into any of us what is really going to happen. Fortunately there are not to many people around here, so we probably won't run into many zombies.
"Well what should we do?" Sam asked, breaking a silence.
Everyone looked at me as if looking for guidance. I guess it only makes sense, I have always been the survival nerd.
"Well I say we start by taking an inventory of what we have after we get our deer meet processed. We should get all that processed tonight if possible, we don't want anything hanging out in the open."
"Good thinking James, we really should know what we have so we can know how long we can really survive here." Meg added. I could already tell that this was going to turn into Meg and I running things around here. I just worry that we will disagree on something and the (hopefully temporary) lack of rules will cause one of us to do something terrible. I can't imagine that happening anyway, we are too good of friends. "Sonya and Sam, come with me. We will start in the kitchen taking an inventory."
"Good idea, the rest of us will go outside and start processing the meat from today and get it in the freezers." I said
The three of them took off, and the rest of us grabbed our knives and met up in the shed to start the process of getting the hanging deer turned into meat we can eat.
After quite some time, we finally had the meat all ready to go. We all cut it up in silence, as if we were still letting the news sink in. It was late now. The sun had just set as we brought the last of the meat into the cabin to put in the freezers. Sonya, Meg, and Sam had already created a pretty extensive inventory list. They had gone through everything in the kitchen and basement already. Once all the meat was in they began counting out what we had in the freezers to add to the list. Once they finished that they came and met up with us on the couches around the fireplace. I had lit a fire earlier just to keep myself busy.
