It was as normal a day as it could be, the bright sun shining down upon the world, a cloudless sky, and the cheerful noises of animals at play. Perfect conditions for writing, I thought. Then the doorbell rang throughout the house.
"Gwen, go get the door!" I heard my oldest brother, Bennet, yell from his spot in front of the TV.
"Why don't you get it yourself?" I said from my room. After a short argument spoken across rooms, I reigned victorious and we answered the door together.
Good thing no one was there, because we had taken quite a while to open the door. Instead of a person, there was a box marked: "To Gwenevieve J. Happy Birthday!" I stood in the doorway, dumbfounded. No one knew my birthday besides Aunt, Uncle, and I, so who could have sent this?
"Oh, a gift! It must be for me!" My second oldest brother, George, said.
Realizing he was going to take it, I grabbed the box and ran upstairs to my room, locked the door, and sighed. Making sure they couldn't open the door, I unwrapped the present. Inside was an inkwell, a quill, and a thick journal and key. I hid the inkwell and quill, then unlocked the journal. I looked through the book, beginning to end, but it was filled with blank pages.
"Who would send me this?" I thought aloud.
"No one, 'cause it's mine!" I heard George yell outside my door. I sighed and knew there was no convincing them.
"Well, I guess I should tell you," I began, hoping that I would finally get through their thick skulls. "It's my birthday!" I bit my lip and closed my eyes, hoping that it had worked.
"No it's not!" I heard Bennet say. "No one knows when it is because we lost your birth certificate!"
How stupid could they be? I know my own birthdate. My parents died five years ago, so I had celebrated nine birthdays with them.
"I think I would know!" I yelled, tears welling up from memories of my parents. I unlocked the door and swung it open. "Look!" I yelled through tears, shoving the card to them. "Now leave me alone!" I slammed the door shut, hoping I wouldn't see them for the rest of the night.

Hope this didn't suck too much! Constructive criticism is very much welcomed! Also, I'm trying to turn a 3-and-a-half page story into a chapter book, so sorry if the spacing is weird. ALSO! Last thing, I swear! There shall be MANY cliffhangers! Huehuehue :3
