On our way to Petsmart, it is very quiet. Even Tuna doesn't make a single meow. I don't like this silence. It's not healthy for my brain not to be distracted right now. I keep getting flashes of the explosion, the feeling of weightlessness right before the ground hits me like a linebacker, and then everything goes black. When I wake there is this awful ringing in my ears, and everything is spinning. I scream, call out for my dad, but the same guy who was strong enough to fight away the people who bullied me and hospitalized me wasn't strong enough to fight off the alien robot bastard. He's lying on the ground, eyes wide open, and all I can do is scream, to no one. Because everyone is dead or taken. Well, not everyone. I look into the back seat, snapped out of my memory, to see Mavis crying silently, like I've never seen a little girl cry. I always thought they were supposed to be loud. I pull over slowly, were about halfway there, but we pull into a dairy queen parking lot. Dairy queen seems to still have the electricity going, so I look back and ask if she wants an ice cream. She wipes away her tears, in a way she thinks I can't see. She's holding tuna and he sounds like a miniature motorboat. "Yeah, that sounds good" she sniffles out. I go and open the door for her, saying, "your majesty" just because I'm all Fucked up and sad doesn't mean she has to be. We walk into the dairy queen and I go in the back where they keep the ice cream, Ginger Satan princess in tow. " what flavor do you want, Mavis?" I ask. She stands there and stares for a minute and then says, "chocolate chip mint." Ugh. Gross. While she may be the last survivor that I know of, I still have mixed feelings. She's a kid, and I wanna make sure she's happy and all that, but she's also a kid, which makes her annoying and sassy. Which I don't have the patience for at the moment. We get her ice cream and begin heading back to the car when I hear a screeching metal sound. We hide behind the counter and look out the Windows. A tiny version of the giant robots that took everyone is walking down the street. It's only big enough to take about four people, I'd say. It uses its tentacles to lift up rubble and peer underneath it. Mavis starts making a noise and I cover her mouth. My other hand is holding tuna in place, who is going crazy. " gonna take my hand off, and you have to be quiet, " I whisper. Mavis nods. I take tuna and I put him in the backpack. Then I grab Mavis's hand, ready to run. The robot thing is getting closer, walking towards where we came from. It looks over to the dairy queen and pauses, and I die a little. But then there is a loud noise down the street. Another car is driving up the road, the driver not seeing the robot. It's behind a building now. As soon as the car gets close, the robot thing jumps out faster than I would've thought possible and stops the car. A green light comes out of the top, and the thing beeps four times. It proceeds to peel the top off of the car like a can of sardines, and there are four people in there. Two are women, and the other two are a little boy and girl. The alien machine uses its tentacles and plops the people one by one into the gelatinous mass on top of it, made for storing people. It then makes a shrill whistling sound, and a large ship, about the size of a mobile home, swoops it up into it and flies off. I let go of a breath I didn't know I was holding, and Mavis is shaking beside me. We get back in the car, ice cream forgotten almost, and continue our drive to Petsmart. This is going to be harder than I thought.
