God help me, I’ve completely failed.
The next thing I heard was the sound of yelling. I was confused. Mum and Dad never argued. I tried to move and the pain that shot up my arm as it regained consciousness was enough to make me yelp, sit bolt upright, open my eyes and bring me back to the present all at the same time, also notifying me of the splitting headache all this multi tasking had just given me.
I looked around me at the red coloured fake leathered seats and the bar stools that looked slightly out of place. The tacky yellow baby high chairs and the slightly laminated looking flooring I was-at that precise minute- sitting on. Burger King? What the…
The yelling stopped. And I saw the boy’s and Becky staring down at me from a table directly opposite where I was sitting.
“Abbie?” I heard his voice before I actually realised which person it had come from. Sure enough though, as I recognised the voice a second later, Josh’s flicky fringed, 13 year old face swam into my view.
“Heh. Hi Guys.”
I didn’t want to go back to sleep. I wasn’t tired and so, ignoring my aching head I pushed myself up onto my knees and then, after re-assessing my spinning head, stood up and tried to make sure I didn’t fall over by placing my hand on a nearby table and leaning all my weight on that.
I gasped as the full effect of my headache returning hit me and made to keel over but something stopped me. I looked up and as much as I was thankful for not hitting the floor, I rolled my eyes.
“Oscar will you please stop catching me? Or else I’ll owe you even more.”
“Do you want me to drop you?” He grinned, making a move to let me fall. I panicked.
“No!!!”
I pushed myself away from him and scoped the room for Emily and Maddie, as I seized onto the remembrance that they had collapsed also. I spotted them before I realised why they were still lying on the floor. I ran over to them. My eyes growing wide with fright.
“Why the hell are they still unconscious!?!” I screamed at the three people who should have cared.
They just stared blankly at me and I gave them an exasperated gasp and knelt down to check the breathing of two of my best friends. Maddie… Emily…. I gave out a noise that meant ‘Exasperation, I'm going to howl, I'm going to cry and SHIT!’ as I realised that neither of them were breathing at all and it looked like it had been that way for a while.
“Why didn’t you help them? WHY HAVENT YOU HELPED THEM? ARE YOU JUST GOING TO SIT THERE AND WATCH THEM DIE?!!?” I wasn’t getting through to anyone. I needed help.
“We didn’t know how to help them.” Becky said quietly, a tear falling from her eye.
“Correction.” I said “You don’t know how to help them. They’re not dead and I refuse to believe otherwise.”
I saw a glint of hope play across Toby’s tearstained face as he looked up at me. I decided this one would be for him. If it worked….
I gestured for Becky to come and join me next to Maddie and, by some crazy miracle, Maddie suddenly gave the biggest gasp ever and threw her body forwards into a coughing fit. I rocked backwards in shock for a couple of seconds until my brain snapped back into its former non rested frame and told Becky to keep her upright so that she could continue to cough freely in case anything was stuck in her windpipe.
I turned my attention to Emily’s non moving form. I tried to think of all the things I had learned about how to save someone’s life before all of this had happened. I asked myself and all my common sense that I could dredge up whether I could actually remember any of it…
