And so we set off, no one knowing quite what to expect and no one daring to imagine. I could see Josh sulking inwardly, never mind sense the fact that right at this moment he was seething. He was trying to look as if he couldn’t care less but having known him for as long as I had, it was pretty easy to unfold his disguise. In these instances it was usually best to leave him well alone as I wasn’t about to define the meaning of ‘storming rage’. I wondered what he was thinking about.

Probably Emily.

And the fact that he couldn’t have her for himself and blahdee blahdee blah. I’d heard it all before. Oscar walked beside me, twiddling his knife in his bare hands. The word ‘idiot’ immediately sprung to mind from the never ending flow of questions and fragments in my head. Emily was on my other side, walking solemnly and keeping pace whilst looking at the ground as if intent on finding a future in its cracks and crevices. She caught my gaze and smiled grimly.

“You ok?” I asked, knowing the answer- no psychic ability required.

“As good as I'm ever going to be.”

And if that was true then my god, we really didn’t have much left to live for.

“It’ll get better…” I guessed.

“You always say that.” She replied, smiling sadly and inwardly.

I broke a grin, the first in a while.

I decided to let her be for a while so she could let thoughts overwhelm her since Emily was probably the one with the biggest brain and the most likely to come up with ideas on how to solve our various dilemmas. I saw her go into her ‘Think mode’ and decided that backing away slowly would be an option, just in precaution of the fact that she could really over think things and blow up.

Looking behind me, I slowed down to walk in sync with Maddie and Becky who were behind me. Becky looked up. Her eyes reflected exactly what I didn’t want to see at that moment in time… or any moment as long as we were still living in this horrible world. Her eyes reflected the truth. A broken charade of false hope and security. I looked away. I didn’t want to see what my life was right now. I was the one bloody living it.

I tried to change the subject on my mind.

“You peeps ok then?” I asked, trying to sound more confident than I felt. I could tell I wasn’t fooling anyone and just let it slide.

I received no form of response at all from Maddie. But then had I actually expected one? I answered my own unvoiced question. No. Even the fact she had said the words that confirmed our shortage of food earlier had been a shock to everyone. I think we had just tried not to show it. It was the first noise shed actually made at all in a couple of weeks. Apart from screaming and crying. But we all did those anyway so I suppose they didn’t count any more.

I wasn’t sure what had made her all but completely mute but I'm pretty sure from the way she held herself and hadn’t spoken that I didn’t want to know. I glanced at Becky. I did a lot of glancing these days. A long stare or time to give your brain something to memorize; it was just too risky. Look for too long and BAM! That’s it you were gone with the wind.

“Yea…normal.” Becky said, answering my question I had completely forgotten about. And I wondered about the word normal. I hated it. I god damn hated that word. If I had any input into the situation then that word would be band from all dictionary printing companies world wide. But then I had to grin to myself darkly as I realised everyone in those factories would most likely be dead. I was snapped out of my thoughts by the bitchy tone in Becky’s voice when she next spoke.

“Are we actually going to town?” She asked. I rolled my eyes. Here we go again. Pinching the top of my nose I turned to face her so that I was walking side ways. She carried on talking.
