Chapter 1: The Students, The Chapel and The Nun
The sky was dark with thick black thunderclouds and it started to drizzle. Then suddenly, with a loud crash of thunder, the heavens burst and torrents of rain came pouring down. Wondering when the rain would stop, Mr. Stark stared out at it, dejectedly. The bus driver's hands were firm on the steering wheel, keeping himself alert, not wanting to give in to the stormy weather. And the six leftover students from Pembrooke High, some were transfixed and captivated by the power of violence of the storm while some groaned.
'This is insane.'
'You got to be kidding me.'
'I thought we were supposed to have sunshine today?'
'We're going to stay there for the night?' Jake Summer peered through the rain-spattered windows as the driver swung the bus into a looming hole between wrought-iron gates. He couldn't quite make out what was ahead of them, but it sure looked like a building alright.
'Looks haunted to me.'
'Definitely abandoned.'
'Not surprised.'
'To think our original plan was cancelled.'
'And now, we're stuck here.'
Kendra Jackson, who was listening to her ipod throughout the whole journey, took off her earphones, spoke suddenly much to everyone's surprise.
'Better than having no shelter.' she said. 'We're lucky enough to find a place to retire for the night. Especially on a night like this.'
'Still looks abandoned to me...'
'Jeepers Creepers!' the driver exclaimed suddenly, stabbing at the brakes. 'We made it! And we're here...'
Everyone turned from the side windows and stared ahead, unsure if they should step out of the bus. The Pembrookians were supposed to have fun at a beach. Swimming, laughing and splashing water on each others' faces. But they were now shivering in the bus. They might have got to the beach on time if Mrs. Douglass hadn't drop one of her most expensive pearl earrings. They spent almost an hour searching high and low for it. So it wasn't surprising their bus was the last to leave. The other Pembrookians had probably reached their destination. Still, no one was to be blamed. No one had premonition there would be a heavy downpour.
'So, who wants to get off first?'
'Horror stories aren't exactly in my reading list.'
'I never knew you had a reading list.'
'Shut up.'
'It's the truth.'
Max Powell, who was observing everyone's reaction in the bus, chuckled amusely to himself suddenly.
'What's so funny?' Allison Green and Nick Reyes asked in unison.
'Look.' Max's finger pointed towards an old chapel ahead of them. 'There's a little light, which means... it's not abandoned.'
Sure enough. He was right. There was a small light flickering through the dark windows. His eyes must have been really sharp to notice it. The only one who couldn't make out what he was pointing at was Laura Tumility.
'What light? Where? I don't see no light!' she exclaimed, getting up from her seat, wiping the windows as if it could make things any clearer.
The driver, impatient, swung round in his seat.
'Well,' he turned to Mr. Stark. 'Are you going to make them stay... or come down from the bus?'
Before Mr. Stark had the slightest chance to answer, the driver huffed, sliding open the side door. Some authority he had. Everyone spilled out from the bus (except the bus driver himself, of course) and took their luggage from the bus.
