First Day

"Five... minutes... left, please," I groaned as I pleaded mom to give back my soft blanket. "Wakie-wakie, my big, strong, turning-11-this-year boy," she said softly as she rubbed my head, but I didn't move a muscle. I couldn't, and I mustn't. My dream would be destroyed!

You see, I was a brave knight, fighting aliens and monsters of all kind, the people praising and admiring me, getting tokens from the Kings and Queens... until mom came and... POOF! My beautiful dream was gone. I tried going back to sleep, hoping that I would get it again. The good news is that mom left the room, and I could peacefully join my people in a different world. But mom left for a reason.

*Drip*

A tiny drop of water fell on my nose.

*Drop*

And another...

*SSss!!* *SSss!!*

There goes my face, all wet. Mom sprayed me with cold water. So much for 'peacefully' join my people. Nanny is like her in so many ways, and mom must've inherited the 'Spray Trick'. "Good, you're up. Now go get dressed. Your dad will leave in about 30 minutes." "Leave? (*Yawns*) To where?" I said in my half-sleepy voice. "Silly child... To school!"

"But dad doesn't go... to school... Isn't... he (*Yawns*) too old?" That was a silly thing to say, of course, my brains seemed to be 'Out Of Order' this morning. "Of you go, in the bathroom!" Mom's foot is taping fast.  This means she's impatient. Things can get pretty nasty when the situation is like this. One slip out of line and she'll make you sit up straight, that's for sure.

I'm usually the quick one in the house, so I was ready in 20 minutes. I had a nice breakfast of half-boiled eggs with pepper. Mom came into the dining room. "Ahil, what's the matter with you? You've got your uniform the wrong way round!" I looked down and flushed red. "No wonder I couldn't find the collar, or the buttons, or the pockets, or the..." "Oh, do hurry up and change," she said as she shooed me, but yet managed to keep that lovely smile of hers.

After 10 long minutes, dad still hasn't come to the car. I was still patiently waiting in the car, outside the house. But, it took longer than just '30 minutes' as mom said. In fact, it took him another 20 minutes, and by then I had fallen asleep.

Four letters. L-A-T-E.

Luckily, the teachers and the prefects are being merciful on every first day of school. But tomorrow, 'Trouble' is their middle name.

I'm feeling the fresh start of a new day, and a new year! Nothing's getting in my way!

But it was very stupid of me to say that.
