I sat there thinking. Perhaps Zul wins this time.
There’s always next year, right?
No.
Not next year. This year, is my year.
I'm not losing to him, that cheat!
I stood up and started again. Swing, throw..
...fail. -.-
Swing, throw...
..click!
Huzzah!
I tugged on the rope, to make sure it was strong. Okay. Now to hoist myself up. I began climbing on the wall, slowly. The hook looks okay.
"Ah!" I said as I almost slipped. I was already in the middle. Too late to go back.
I made it to the top! I was so proud!
Now to slide myself down the other way. So, all I have to do is switch the position of hook the other way.. and..
...THE HOOK FELL INTO THE STORE.
*Facepalm*
Great. Now I'm stuck with my body half in the store and the other half out.
Think..
Okay. So I grab the other side of the window, both feet on the wall, push with my legs..
..and jump!
YESSHHH!!
I landed on the grass, rolling to prevent any serious injury. Oh, sweet air! Sweet grassy scent! I could do my victory dance right now! Who knows? I'll be an agent one day.. Hehehe... But, wait. First things first. I followed the road to where everyone ran, surprisingly, without being noticed by anyone. And soon, I was sprinting alone, along the road.
In just a few minutes, I past the first checkpoint. There are five checkpoints, according to Miss Yasmin.
"Ahil? Were you left behind?" Asked Miss Sakinah, my former Science teacher who taught me last year, who was also guarding at the first checkpoint. "It's a long story, I've got to go!" Miss Sakinah gave me a drink before I left. At this point, I was getting tired, but I know I can't stop.
So, I just kept running..
and running..
..and I passed Chubby, who was just walking, taking his own sweet time, drinking a juice. I know he hates things like these. At least he's putting off some fat. If you want to make him run, there's only one thing he'll run for.
Food.
"Oh, hey, Ahil." He waved at me, and sucked on his straw. "Hey," I simply said. "What are you--- oohh.. Got to go!!!" He said, sweating. "What?" "Toilet break! Byee!" He said, running towards the toilet. Make that two things he'll run for.
I regained some energy after talking to Chubby, because I jogged beside him, and, man was he slow! I soon passed the second checkpoint and grabbed another drink.
Third checkpoint. Another drink. I drank and poured water on myself. Lots of people are already tired by now and decided to relax. This made my job a lot easier. Two more checkpoints. I took turns jogging and running. I'll sprint when I approach the finishing line. Since they were walking, I decided to jog, lifting the burden of my muscles a little. After 5 minutes of cooling down, I ran a little faster.
Fourth checkpoint. Whew! Another drink. I've past countless number of people. One more checkpoint, that is, the finish line.
"MOVE OUT OF THE WAY!" Someone yelled behind me. He jerked me and I was on the floor. It felt like Zul's push earlier.
I was correct. He didn't recognise me, though. He even push the others ahead of me. I frowned.
Suddenly, I felt a sharp cramp in my stomach.
I think I drank too much water!
No matter. I must continue. I got up and ran, knowing that Zul is way ahead of me.
I moaned as I run, trying to fight the cramp. It's hard.I knelt down, holding my stomach, hoping that the pain would subside.
I looked at the back and noticed something. I gasped in shocked and I found a new determination for me to keep on going. My mind was completely blank and I focused on my goal. My stomach was aching, but I completely ignored it. My legs were begging for a rest but I kept on going like nothing ever happened. I was really determined. Like, really.
I saw the finish line. There it is! The teachers supported me. So did the youngsters who had just finished. I past the line! There were cheers.
But I didn't stop running.
I went on running until I reached a nearby playground up a tiny little hill, shaded with trees. I huffed and panted, coughing and sweating the whole way through. From that distant, I could see Zul passing the finish line, followed by a few others. I stood there, frozen, not daring to go back down.
After a few minutes, I decided to turn back. I spotted Zul coming towards me.
He wore an apologetic face.
"I'm sorry, Ahil. I shouldn't have done that." I looked at him and his pathetic little expression.
"I really am sorry. Do forgive me." I sense this kind of apology is the ' I have to Apologize to Get out of Trouble' kind of thing.
"Fine. I forgive you. Don't EVER do it again." I said. "Oh, thank you!" He said and went away. I could see his expression change form 'Forgve Me' to anger. Whatever. I'm not going to entertain any nonsense from him because I spotted Faiz.
I saw him breathing heavily. It looks like he had just finished. Someone came over to him and had a little chat. He caught sight of me and waved happily. I waved at him back and went over to him. I grinned at him.
"Told ya' I'll see you at the finishing line," "Okay, okay," and Faiz pulled a face.
An announcement was made:
"It seems that the Primary 4 and 5s have just finished their 3km. In first place....
... Azhar from Pri 5!" Disappointment filled my head.
"And in second place, suprisingly, from last to 2nd place, is Ahil!" Faiz pat my back so hard I almost lost balance and fell to the front. Then a group of people crowded me.
"How did you do that? Zul was like approaching the line, and you were like whoooooosh!"
"You passed him like lightning!"
"Tell us Ahil, what's your secret?" My face turned red.
"Umm, it was easy. I saw something that gave me determination," I stopped to gave a cough to clear the awkwardness, then continued.
"It was,
a big, black dog,"
