"Excuse me!"
A team of nurses run pass me as they lead a bleeding man into the ER room. I sigh and take a seat across the busy hallway.
Normally, I stay out of places where humans are more likely to touch me - the hospital being one of those places - but today, I had to meet with a Neophyte Guardian Angel.
What a bother.
"Captain!" A voice squeaks from beside me and just in time, a little girl with curly black hair pops out.
"Yes Neophyte 6028? You are late," I point out and Neophyte 6028 begins to fluster.
"Ugh...so sorry, Ma'am..I mean Captain Ma'am...I was just..." She begins but I roll my eyes.
I despise late comers.
"That bleeding man the nurses brought in, that was your assigned human right?" I cut to the chase and Neophyte 6028 turns pale.
"Ugh...Captain," She begins to plead, "I'm so sorry! I didn't know that he was going to crash right into a truck!"
"Really now?" I pull in my most amused voice. "You didn't sense the fact that your Human was in grave danger when he was overspeeding? You must be some kind of angel!"
My words shaken her but I don't mind. She begins to fumble her fingers.
"But...but I thought that...I thought that...it'd be alright!" She reasons out, "There were no cars in the area!"
"So you just allowed him to break the law which in turn caused him to break his neck?" I ask amusingly and she begins to whine. "You are a really perfect guardian angel."
"Please Captain...please," she pleads with me, "Please don't report me to the Chief. I don't want to be a Water Angel again!"
"Neophyte 6028," I call and she stiffens.
"Yes Captain!" She does a salut and I smile.
"Can you tell me why out of all the possible angel positions, those who belong to the Guardian and Death Angels are the highest ranking?" I ask and she immediately replies.
"Because they're the angels that have to interact daily with Humans. So they're the best of the best."
"Correct. So can you tell me the unique nature of the Guardian Angels?"
"Of course Captain," she takes a huge gulp, "Normally, there's a ratio of a thousand humans to one Guardian Angel. But for those people whose lives are destined to heavily affect the entire human race, one specific Guardian Angel is assigned to them. These special humans are termed Essentials."
"What's our job?"
"To make sure that the Essentials live as long as possible inorder to fulfill their roles."
"So what happens when an Essential dies?" My question causes Neophyte 6028 to hold her breath.
"The...entire balance.....is broken..." She says this and I feel a chill run through me.
"Exactly," I confirm. "And has there ever been a case where an Essential died?"
"None in the entire history. They all lived to fulfill their roles," Neophyte 6028 replies in a jolly tone.
"Correct, that means Guardian Angels never fail," I stare at her and she begins to look very pale. "You're lucky Neophyte 6028, you weren't guarding an Essential. You can go now."
"Eh?! Really Captain?! You're making me stay as a Guardian Angel?" She clasps my hands and I politely take them away.
"Yes, you're very lucky Neophyte 6028," I say with a smile but she hardly hears this, "because I'm in a really good mood today."
Neophyte 6028 happily skips away and I sigh.
"You cheat!" Suddenly, Death Angel Captain teleports from the other end of the hall.
"Hey Death Captain! What brings you here?" I say happily but he glares at me.
"YOU KNEW THAT THIS WOULD HAPPEN, DIDN'T YOU?! YOU PLANNED FOR THIS ALL ALONG!" He shouts and I just raise my brows.
"Planned is such a strong word," I say amusingly, "Let's just say that I'm pretty good at guessing."
I look into his eyes and give a smile.
Told you.
