Nahla's POV
(Photo of Nahla above)
It was late when it happened. When I was woken up from my sleep, unknowing my life would change forever. I felt the sharpest pain course through my body and I was forced to turn. My tan coat emerged through my skin as my bones cracked like shattered glass.
And when my eyes opened they were a blue so deep it almost appeared grey. I was the first female alpha. And not everyone took well to it. my father had been murdered but people looked to me for leadership once they knew of my status. There was no time to mourn. I could not believe it, neither did most of our people at first but when they saw my eyes they knew because only alphas had this trait. After an alpha dies the light in their eyes, (which is suppose to be where an alphas power comes from) is transferred into the next alpha when the past alpha spirit choses their successor.
A female wolf has never had this much power and many hates that I now had more than them. It has only been two weeks since my change. Many saw me as a threat because I was a female unmated alpha. Two reasons I was seen as dangerous by the elder council.
I was to meet before the council and discuss the new change. I woke up showered and put on my head wrap as well as face paint. I had to for the meeting, it was tradition. I put on a African print dress and sandals. We were located in South Africa, for years we stayed put. Even after white humans came, along with white wolves. We stayed hidden and not many have seen us, though they know who we are. We occasionally make contact with other packs.
I walked out of my disturbingly empty house and down the road. My house was at the center of the village and the council wasn't far. Once I arrived I was greeted by the elders, all men of course. I snarled at the misogynistic comments I was about to receive. Council member Zedu began to speak.
"Nahla we all here have had a close relationship with you since you were a child, your father was a great leader and we are sorrowful for your loss. But you can not lead. There has never been a female alpha ever, and for good reason. It is not in a woman's blood to lead, especially not a pack of wolves. Female wolves are strong but can be irrational because of your heightened emotions. You tend to be more ferocious, which is why you need a mate to keep you in check. To control you and keep our pack safe. You can not rule, your alpha power would be safer with another." he proclaimed. My fist began to ball up and I could barely think right through my rage.
Yes, an Alpha could give up their power, but it has to be willingly and it can only go to a person fit for the job. A person who the alpha spirits deem eligible. But it doesn't always work and could kill the person taking the power and possibly the alpha.
It's been done many times in my pack because when a wolf hits a certain age they begin to loose their power, so typically alphas give their power up so that there is not a weak leader. If other packs hear of a weak alpha they would try and take over the pack. But for them to ask me a perfectly capable able bodied wolf. I wanted to tear their throats out for suggesting such a thing.
