Enemies are safer than friends, and sometimes more trustworthy. They can't betray you because you never trusted them enough to give them the chance. It's the people that you care about that hurt you the most because you give them that power and trust them not to abuse it.
My trust was abused and I suppose it's my own fault for not seeing the signs sooner...Well I guess I did see them but I just didn't notice them. Never would I have thought that two of the most important people to me would have done something like this.
My story starts with a goodbye.
***
I pull up to the curb and cut the engine before reaching behind the backseat and grabbing the wrapped present that I hid there a week ago. It took me a month to find exactly what I wanted but after countless stores and countless isles but with my shopping superpowers I finally found it and it will be totally worth it when I see the look on her face as she opens it.
My best friend and I have this tradition of getting up at the ass crack of dawn on the others birthday so that we can be the first to wish them a happy birthday. My face breaks into a smile as I walk up the paved driveway. Christina has no idea that I'm coming back today and not tomorrow, I'm supposed to still be at my grandparents log cabin. Or at least that is what I told her.
I dig through my purse once I'm at the front door for the key she and her parents gave me when we were 15 considering that I practically live here.
Christina's parents and mine have known each other since they went to high school together. Our town is very tiny, a population of a few thousand so there was only one high school and the closest University is a couple towns over so Christina, my boyfriend Tyler, and I were all going to attend there this fall and possibly get a small apartment together.
Christina has always been the outgoing one and I'm more of the cautious one. Christina is the one to jump headfirst into the pool of life while I stand on the tiled edge and just try to work up the courage to dip my toe in. I've always admired that about her but sometimes I get worried that she will swim out too far into the deep end for me to follow.
Opening the door as quietly as possible, considering it's still dark outside, I don't want to wake anyone up...yet. I wince as the floorboards creak underneath my feet as I make my way across the living room and slowly creep up the stairs past all the knick-knacks on the shelves that her mom collects. I think it is great to have a collection of something but when I was 13 I accidently told her I thought her frog statues were pretty and now I have my own collection.
Confusion fills me when I near Christina's bedroom door and see that the door is slightly ajar and the light on because she never sleeps with her light on...then I hear him. "Jesus. Oh God I love you, babe." Tyler. It doesn't take a genius to figure out what they are doing.
My vision starts to blur and I feel something wet hit my cheeks. I don't say a word. I stands there at the almost closed door as confusion laces my mind. I don't make a sound. Not even as I let the gift fall from my hands and land on the carpeted floor at my feet.
Silence. Silence as I bite my lip and slowly turn around. I walk back across the hallway, back down the stairs, past the knick-knacks and for some reason I notice things in this house that I've never took the time to notice before. The flowers on the windowsill, the pile of magazines piled next to the floral armchair that her mom grandma always sits at. Perhaps it is because a part of me knows that I will never see the inside of this house again. No matter what happens next I know that something has broken, irrevocably broken.
I don't hesitate as I place one hand on the knob of the wooden front door and quietly pull open the door, step across the threshold, and slam it shut.
