THE SOUND PIERCED THROUGH THE THICK CITY'S BARRIER, so loud it broke the unbreakable. The damages it caused to the individuals everyday typical lives were infinite, uncountable. So sudden, so unpredictable. No one had expected it, no one had seen it coming.
Somewhere hidden in the lost abandoned town, a brown girl sat behind her school's desk, staring at the classroom's clock for the bell to ring. Less than an hour was left before summer vacation. A few minutes before she would finally be free from all homework, all responsibilities. A few hundreds of seconds and she would hit the beach everyday at sunrise, surfing in the serene quiet ocean waves with nothing but peaceful thoughts on her mind. No more stress, no more horrible nightmares, wondering what could possibly happen the next day; only her and the few friends she'd managed to make over her discomfort. Her small apartment was a good thirty miles away from the beach, but it was a car ride worth making every morning. She had barely gotten her driver's licenses that she was already a regular customer in the beach's cafe. She knew about every worker at the counter, and they all warmly welcomed her each time she opened the two glass made doors the shop owned as an entry once a week.
This innocent teenager; another one soon gone.
A few seats behind her, a blond boy, every girl's pet dream. Skinny, muscular; not too much, but more than enough. Flirting technics, just-got-out-out-of-bed sexy hairstyle, beautiful deep blue eyes, hot and cute; everything about him was perfect. Popular, nice, single, not even a player. Like I said; every girl's dream. Everyone could feel how cliche he was. Smirking down at his phone, answering with a thin smile on his lips. His hoodie sometimes placed on his pretty hair, his several curious absents, creating a mysterious vibe around his figure. Unlike the surfer girl, he didn't seem to mind going to school. He was looking down at his phone when the teacher was saying his final goodbyes, not at all concerned to the fact only a matter of time was left before summer vacation.
But the rush to run out of the classroom was unfortunately not the reason the first victim would vanish; he was so not immune to the accidents, if you liked to pretend it in deed was an accident.
Behind him, the popular bitch. Next to her, Drama Queen. Nerds. Geeks. Jocks. Emo. At least one student per social category at a typical high school was located in the room, but not one even tried to run, not like they could. It was sad, really. Their innocence, naivety. Teachers weren't protected either, neither were doctors, dentists, lawyers, kids, or any other human being in the district.
History happened to be the last subject of the day. They studied the First and Second World War lately, and Mr. Smith was clearing the subject to finish off the year, discussing its victims and the repercussions it had on teenagers nowadays.
Some still pitied the past, some didn't care. Some brought back memories of torture by actions, others decreased the impact. Some made fun of it. The heartless ones. The ones you could stare at for hours, wondering what could possibly be going on inside their heads, trying to find out if they even have a soul. Souls master your body. The purer it is, the wiser and nicer the being will be. The only way to feed your soul is to believe in something; anything. If you don't, then your strength comes from nowhere, and you simply have no reason to be. Some people live this way, the pitiful way. They seem free, able to do whatever they want, and it's true; but they're empty of reason, of belief. If they even have a heart it's dark and meaningless. Some would say they so deserved what happened, but no one deserves such a terrible ending with no one to attend their funeral, which won't even be considering the lack of residents in the district and the total of deaths the accident had caused, one of the losses alone sounding so meaningless. At least no one was there to feel the pain after the impact.
