The Avalanche
I guess that's what Kiaren meant by 'falling snow', Umbra thought, staring up at the all-encompassing wave of snow and ice heading directly towards them.
"We've got to get to the sides of it!" Umbra cried, remembering an article on the internet he had read.
"How?!" Aunora said, waving her arms."This thing is miles long and we don't have that kinda time!"
On the verge of hyperventilating, Umbra searched the area around him. They had progressed some through the mountains, the fight leading them into a much more rocky outcrop.
On the side of the opposing mountain, there was a small entrance to a cave, directly in the path of the wave of snow. An overhanging of rocks loomed above it, threatening to fall at any minute.
This could be dangerous, Umbra thought as he started to formulate a plan, but we don't have any other choice. There's no way we can outrun this avalanche. There's nowhere else to go.
The earth around them, jarring both of the blood-splattered adults. Snow dropped from the surrounding mountains, and Umbra was afraid any more movement would cause another avalanche.
"I got it!" Umbra called over the roar of snow, "See that cave, Aunora? I need you to knock those rocks down as get into it. It should protect us from the avalanche!"
Aunora stared at Umbra like he was mad. "Are you kidding me?! We'll be trapped!"
"I just want to survive this thing right now!" Umbra screamed, waving his arm at the impending snow fall. "We can figure out the rest later!"
Aunora made a motion to reply, but was nearly knocked off her feet. Umbra looked up, gasping in surprise.
They were running out of time.
The near-invincible wave of snow had crossed over the majority of the mountain, looming about a thousand yards away and speeding towards them like a freight train.
"We have to do this NOW!" Umbra commanded, his voice barely audible. "RUN!"
Umbra took off running, taking heavy, harsh steps. Aunora stumbled behind him, muttering about Umbra's plan under her breath. He came to a skidding stop at the cave, his breath heaving. The avalanche was no more than seconds away from hitting them.
"Knock down that overhanging, now, Aunora! We've gotta jump!" Umbra screamed, fear raising his voice in pitch. It was now or never.
With one more tentative look behind her, Aunora pounded her fist into the wall, and the rocks started to crumble.
"JUMP!"
----
Umbra's ears were ringing, and he suddenly became aware of the feeling of cold stone on his cheek. He shakily pulled himself up, coughing up dust. The cave was even colder than it was outside, with no sun to offer its warm rays.
He was several inches away from a wall of collapsed boulders that he assumed blocked the entrance, and through the cracks of the rocks, he could see firmly packed snow.
It was dark, Umbra's eyes taking their time to adjust to the low light. After blinking, he was soon able to descry Aunora's still form, laying flat on her stomach.
He almost leaned down to help her, but a vicious feeling passed over him as he remembered their scuffle.
She was going to kill me! Umbra thought, glaring at her body with disgust. Once she comes to, will we still be fighting? He heart dropped into his stomach. When we last left off, she was on top of me. Does that mean I lost?
His stomach felt sick at the thought of actually losing to Aunora, as he had never even considered the possibility. Shame passed over him, his pride just as dented as his body. I can't stand for this.
A low groan caught Umbra's attention, and Aunora stirred. The demon squirmed and tried to wrestle her body into a sitting position, but something was wrong.
"What the h-" Aunora hissed drearily, turning her head around. Her eyes widened, both of them seeing it at the same time.
During their frantic scramble for shelter, Aunora's leg had been caught under the wall of rocks.
Author's Note- oh dear, thats not good lol
