Mrs. Green shouts and yells and screams, and punishes the four girls with after school detention. At 3'oclock when the last bell rings, four little girls make their way into the detention hall where they meet for the first time. In that hall filled with 1,000 words essays and graffiti under tables, the four girls click. 8 years later, they don't exactly remember what got them into detention in the first place. But they do remember, and are assure, of one thing. Those 10 year old girls are now 18 and 19 year old college students, and best friends for life.
Chapter 1
~~~~~~
I, Monica Joyce Parker, otherwise known as Nick, am so screwed. I broke the unwritten law of female friendship. Not only am I in love with my best friend Amber Sage's boyfriend, I'm currently sitting in a darkened cinema with him watching a-everyone-knows-it's-a-romantic-movie, New Moon.
Edward and Bella are on the huge black screen, walking hand in hand as everyone looks on. He stares at her with such love, such pride, it's almost painful. Or maybe that's just me, because it sure as heck feels painful when my best friend's boyfriend, Daniel Chase, grips his hand tightly in mine, all the while rubbing soft circular motions with this thumb onto my palm. Painful....yet it feels so good.
A flash back races through my mind but the pictures play at normal speed.
Amber and I, the wind racing through our hair as we soar through the heavens the higher we propel the swings. We're 15 at the time, too old to be caught in the neighborhood park, yet alone on the neighborhood swings, though not exactly caring either.
Anyways, someone should tell that to Naomi, the third line that makes up our Best Friend Diamond, who's digging her perfectly manicured blood red fingernails into the sandbox. A sandbox filled to the brim with a bunch of hyper 4 year old's. Judging by the plastic pails and shovels scattered around what little place Noami can call her own, she's attempting to make a castle. Cute.
Emily, the last girlfriend to complete the diamond, is bringing forth the child in her as well. Running around the park with our flag, the Best Friend Diamond, glued onto a kite. The higher into the sky the little kite goes, the louder Emily's laughs are.
I shake my head to return to the present, the memory upsetting me, reminding me of the horrible crime I'm committing.
Danny turns around to look at me. His eyes stare into mine in a not so we're-only-friends type of way. In fact, it oddly resembles the same look Jacob is giving Bella. A, you're everything I want but can't have look. A look I've been secretly giving Danny the past couple of months.
Speaking of "past couple of months", why the hell did I suddenly stop my stony silence and accept his goddamn invitation to watch a movie with him?!?! If I've been avoiding him so well over the past few months, what on earth possessed me to come today?
Oh who am I even kidding. I know why I came. I'm in love with him. Have been in love with him for the past five years. Always will be in love with him.
Another flashback forces its way into my mind. I try to fight back, remove any form of entry, but to no avail. The flashback presses play and the pictures start up again.
We're 13, it's our first day of our first year of middle school, and we decide to draw up a pact to assure our scared friendship will last all through middle school and throughout the scary demonic hell called high school. On Amber's king size bed with blankets propped up to form a tent, under the security of a flashlight, Emily takes out a notebook and a WINX magic marker. We're ready to write down the Best Friend Diamond Pact.
