12 years later

Kassandra's POV

"You what?" I yell in disbelief. My mind could not process what he had just said.

"Babe, I'm sorry. I can ex-" his fake apology becomes interrupted as I slap his face. Hard.

A few seconds pass by, and I slap him again. "How could you do this? You're such a man whore!" This time, tears can be seen forming on my eyes. My boyfriend of two years cheats on me, and is this how I'm supposed to react?

Brendan walks closer to me and tries to grab my arm, but I reluctantly pull away and walk backwards to avoid his touch. "Kass, please-" he begs.

"Ew, get away from me!" I run down the street, away from that man whore and grab my phone which was securely kept in my pocket. I can hear Brendan running after me and calling my name, so I make a quick turn and hide behind the big SUV in some parking lot in the city. Instinctively, I dial the first person that comes to mind.

Not even after the first ring, I can hear his soft voice. "Hello?"

"Jonathan. He cheated on me," I spill right away, forgetting to greet him.

"He what?" This time, Jonathan's voice isn't so soft anymore, for his anger and frustration can be heard through the phone. I can hear shuffling from the other side of the line - he is most likely getting out of bed and pulling his pants on at this moment.

Trust me, he has been my best friend for the past twelve years, so I probably know more about him than he knows about himself.

And I don't see our friendship ending anytime soon.

I grit my teeth. "He. Cheated. On. Me. Now stop asking questions and pick me up before some pervert thinks I'm a prostitute on the streets and picks me up!"

"Fine, give me the street," he mumbles. His slamming of the door can be heard loudly through the speaker. "I'm in front of that one place," I squint my eyes to get a better view of the restaurant. "Tilly's Burgers. Now hurry up!"

I hang up on Jonathan before he even has a chance to respond to my harsh command. Never have I ever imagined myself being cheated upon, especially by a man who treated me so well and loved me very dearly. My relationship with Brendan was so ebullient, so joyful, so beautiful that it almost felt as if I was living a fairytale: he was my prince in shining armor and I was his princess. But now, all of those dreams that I thought came to life has now been shredded to pieces. Those thoughts continue to roam in my head until I come crashing down to the ground, my hands covering the tears streaming down on my face.

It isn't until I realize that Jonathan's beat-up Toyota is parked, and when my hands are removed from my face, I see my best friend running towards me. "Kassie!" he shouts, engulfing me in his wide arms.

"Oh Jonathan!" I sob onto his chest, wetting his Nike t-shirt. He carries me without any hesitation to his car, gently placing me on the passenger seat and closing the door lightly. As we leave the parking lot, Jonathan sighs. "I'm taking you to my place."

In return, I silently nod. Throughout the car ride, Jonathan's held no expression on his chiseled face. It seems as if he is in a deep thought like a student wondering whether to choose choice "A" or "C" on an exam. When he parks on his driveway, I follow him out to his grand, two-story detached home that settles right beside a gorgeous blue lake. As a child, I would constantly feel envious of where Jonathan lived, because during the winter the lake would freeze and the two of us would go ice skating together, being carefree about the problems that were occurring on this world.

I sit on the tall kitchen stool, quietly waiting for Jonathan to start the conversation; however, my tactic fails when he sits on the other side of the island. His big eyes stare into mine but does not say anything, causing me to look down. "I knew this was going to happen one day," he whispers. "You and that Gallagher kid, breaking up."

My eyebrows widen, "What made you assume that?" I ask without thinking. He chuckles and shakes his head in disbelief, "I knew it from the start. Brendan Gallagher was up to no good. I even told you to watch out for him, yet you still went on that date with him!"

My expression angers drastically, faster than the speed of sound. "Oh, so you're blaming me now?" I laugh sarcastically. "I thought best friends are supposed to be supportive of each other, not the other way around! Wow Jonathan, way to go." My 5'6" frame jumps out of the stool and begins walking towards the front door. Tears escape my eyes again, and as my right hand is about to grasp the doorknob, a hand tugs my left arm. "Jonathan. Let. Go. Now." My teeth is grinding so much that I can feel as if they're starting to fall off at any moment.

As stubborn as he always is, Jonathan doesn't move an inch. "No. I am never going to let you leave me. Ever. And Kassie, I'm sorry. I should've chosen my words-"

"Save it", I cut him off. "I don't need any of your sweet talking crap." I pull my left arm out harshly, causing Jonathan to stumble back a bit.

"Don't talk to me anymore." With that said, I slam the door on his face and begin my journey back home.
