When writing the first... chapter of anything, it's good to leave space for the reader to wonder but you also need to give them ground to wonder on. You want them drawn in, lured into reading more. Make it interesting but don't pull all your tricks out or the story will be way too predictable. Inform them as to what's going on but don't turn it into a full on informational 2,000 word paragraph.

Which leads me to another note, don't writing paragraphs that are huge. If you must, break them up. When I see huge chunks of writing in the first chapter I don't want to read it. It's intimidating, it seems like too much effort to read all that at once. But if there's a break it doesn't seem like that much. Presentation is key here.

I don't like seeing giant paragraphs anywhere especially in the story or even book I'm about to read. It just seems like too much, you know? Like someone is trying too hard.
