"Hurry up Mary. You're going to be late for school." a voice yelled.

"Uuh" Mary groaned. Her mother was calling her again, just like she had 5 minutes ago. She looked at her alarm clock to check the time. It read 7:30. Mary got up and looked in her small mirror. She was average looking for her time period, with brown hair and green eyes. The only thing that set her off from every other girl was how she dressed. She never had braces before making her teeth crooked and although she wore glasses, they were the huge. She had begged her mother to let her get those catty glasses all the other girls wore, but her mother said that her current glasses were perfectly fine.

" If you don't come down here in 5 minutes I will make you ride the bus." Mary's mother yelled upstairs.

"Oh not the bus." That was the place she hated the most. Mary was an easy target since she lived in the neighborhood with the more popular people.

"I'm getting dressed. Be down in 3 minutes." She yelled down to her mother. She went to her closet and opened it to see different colors of dresses and only a few jeans and shirts. She picked out a blue dress and closed it. Mary hated wearing dresses but her mother always said that if she wants to get anywhere that she needs to dress appropriately. She put the dress on, put her hair in a ponytail and went downstairs to find her mother making eggs and bacon with her father and her brother,John, already sitting by the table, talking about football.

"Good morning" her father briefly said, immediately going back to talking about football.

"Good morning sweetheart" her mother said kissing her on the cheek. "Can you give your father and brother the plate of bacon and then sit down. The eggs are almost done," she asked without looking up from the cooking eggs.

She took the plate, put it on the table and then sat down to the right of John, who was arguing about why Los Angeles should win the Superbowl next year.

"They've been training real well and besides, the Browns were sucking last season." John told their father.

"Have you seen the rams, after they lost one of the best quarterbacks, they won't be able to win a single game," Mary's father.

" Alright you two, enough of that talk," Mary's mother said, walking toward the table with the pan of eggs." That is more of a dinner table talk than for breakfast. Arthur, how about you ask Mary how school is going and about the sock hop"But mom, the Superbowl is one of the best topics to talk about!" John complained.

"No your mother is right," Arthur said. " So Mary, what are you learning at school?"

"Not much now that it's almost over. Most people are worrying about prom and graduation." Mary replied.

"Thank you Jennie," Her father said when her mother put eggs on his plate. "That's right, the sock hop is coming up. Who are you going with?"

"Nobody would ask her!" John exclaimed.

"Now John, that's not a nice thing to say." Mary's mother said while sitting down. "So , has anybody asked you yet?"

"No, I don't even know if I am going to go." Mary mumbled. She looked at the time and saw it was 8:25. "I've got to go or I'm going to be late for the bus." She got up and grabbed her backpack while putting her shoes on. She was about to open the door when..
"Let me drive you." Her father said getting up.

"No, it's fine. I like walking to school." Mary said walking out. "Bye"
