Chapter 17

I would say I was surprised that Kier didn’t try to contact me after that.  I mean, he tried to every night before he tricked me into thinking that it was my dad messaging me.  Now I just watched my GPS every night for the last two nights, waiting for him to try and talk to me again.

“So,” I said when I’d stopped for the night.  I was talking with my dad.  I was in need of normal conversation.  “How are you?”

Dad looked at me on the screen for a moment before bursting out into laughter.  “You’re in need of normal conversation, huh?” he asked.

I rolled my eyes.  Sometimes I thought he could read my mind.  “Yeah, I am,” I said.  “And I just want to get home.”

“Well, I know Sonora and Isla want you home, too,” he said, smiling at me.

“Really?” I asked, perking up.  “How are they?”

He laughed at me again.

“They’re just fine,” he said.  “I think that Isla’s been staying at our house with Sonora when she’s not at school.  They’ve been watching coverage of the Race together for moral support, they claim.  I’ve talked with them a few times.”

I shook my head, sighing.  “They always worry too much when it comes to me,” I said.

“Well, they’re your extended family,” he said, smiling.  “Of course, they worry about you.”

I shifted in my seat, trying to get more comfortable.  There was only so much you could do in a car.

“So are they coming back to the city for the Closing?” I asked.  “I’d love to see them then.”

Dad nodded on the screen.  “Yeah, they’re coming in tomorrow, I think,” he said.  “I know they’re excited to see you again.”

“I am, too,” I said.  “And I can’t wait to get back to my bed.”

He laughed.  “I was, too, when I was in the Race,” he said.

“That, and you had Mom to get back to,” I said, smiling slightly.

Dad just stared at me for a long moment before speaking.  “She would have been so proud of you, Lennox,” he said quietly.  “I know she would have.”

I nodded.  “I know, Dad,” I said.

I could tell when the Race was winding down to a close, especially when I started recognizing landmarks that I’d passed the first day.  I passed through the town that I’d stopped at the second night that I was on the road.  I would have thought that they would know that I was coming through, but absolutely no one was out.  It didn’t even look like anyone was in their houses.
