Part 1 -- Fateful Encounter

Deep in the blue sea, amidst the beautiful and colorful corals, lived a colony of enchanting sea creatures with the upper side of the body resembling the human's body while the lower part resembling the fish. Their appearances were so enrapturing that upon a glance, all mortal beings would fall head over heels and fascinated to the point where they would give up their life only to be with these creatures.

Every moonlight night, they would come up to bathe and play under the bright moonlight. Their laughing and singing voice would attract the fishermen, yet none of them had ever seen any of these mesmerizing creatures. They remained as legend and folktales for the people native to the seashore.

Tonight, the night was colorless. The sea was soundless. A premonition of a storm.

"Lu Cang, where are you going?" The leader of the colony asked worriedly as he saw the youngest merman was swimming away from the colony.

"Surface."

"What for? A great storm is coming, with your current swimming ability, you won't be able to fight the strong current." Ding Peng as the leader had always been particularly worried for this youngest merman. As the youngest, Lu Cang was the most curious and stubborn of them all. He didn't just accept whatever they told him, he would demand for concrete proof. Ding Peng could see, with his prideful and smart disposition, Lu Cang certainly would be a good leader in the future.

"I want to see the sea's calmness before the storm. I only heard others saying about how eerily silent the world was without the sound of the wind and the waves just before the storm, but I have never seen it with my own eyes yet."

"Lu Cang, it is not something you should be curious about. Despite the calmness, it is extremely dangerous to be at the surface during this time."

"I will be fine, Leader. You forgot? I beat you in the swimming contest." The gleam of pride was shining in his striking sharp eyes. His sword-shaped brows were fully displaying his youthful arrogance.

"Fine. But as soon as the sea begins to move, you also must come down immediately." Knowing he could never convince him once he had that kind of expression, Ding Peng just heaved a long sigh and asked him to return as soon as possible.

Nodding his head, Lu Cang just swam vertically to the surface. His swimming ability was quite amazing for his age. It was both swift and elegant. Ding Peng could only lead the rest of the colony to the deeper ocean so that they would not be affected by the great storm.

------

The sea was frighteningly calm. The moonless night had become even darker with the thick black clouds covering the pitch-dark sky.

The Crown Prince of Datong, Xuan Yuan Jing, had just returned from his leisure voyage from the Southern sea. At the present, he was standing on the deck, out in the open, observing the boundless dark universe.

For some unknown reasons, he felt the urge to come out from his comfortable cabin, seemingly something was calling him. Seeing the motionless sea, there was a mysterious charm about this absolutely tranquil and silent world. The unmoving surface of the sea was like a bottomless abyss. He felt as if his soul could be absorbed by the limitless darkness.

In the middle of the serenity, a soft splash sound of water piqued his curiosity.

When he looked down from the deck, he was stunned to the point he forgot to breathe.

---A pair of glistening eyes were looking back at him. For a moment that felt like forever, the two pairs of eyes were locked. None of them could tear away their line of vision.
