As Matthew progressed in his pregnancy, it got harder and harder to keep up with his school work. He was tired all the time and seemed to have a doctor's appointment every other day. But he still managed to meet his deadlines with only minor tears.
By February he was getting anxious. It was close to his due date and he didn't know how much work would pile up due to his baby's birth. And so, the strong willed Canadian worked harder than ever to stay on top of it all despite his family's protect.
One night, as he was up late working on a paper due the next afternoon, he started to feel pains in his stomach. He ignored them, too focused on his work.
At around four in the morning, he couldn't take it anymore. He scooted over in the bed, poking Ivan in the cheek.
"Da?" His violet eyes opened slowly.
"I..."
"Matvey, is it the baby?"
"I think so."
Ivan shot up. "I will get your parents."
"No, Ivan, I've got a paper to finish." Matthew gestured at his laptop.
"Vanya, you're having a baby..."
"Yeah, but I've got a paper to finish too."
"When is it due?"
"Tomorrow afternoon."
"Do you think you could dictate it to Alfred while giving birth?"
"No. Not Alfred. He spells colour without a U."
"I could do it, but I wanted to be holding your hand..."
Matthew pursed his  lips. "I've got papa and dad for that...it's okay, I swear."
Ivan chuckled to himself. "If you insist." He lifted Matthew out of the bed along with his laptop and charger, carrying the load off to the master bedroom.
Matthew remembered a lot from that day. He remembered the ride to the hospital, him lying on his boyfriend's lap, whimpering as the pain got worse. He remembered the birth, crying as doctors shouted orders at him, trying as best as he could to finish the paper, holding Francis and Arthur's hands until they turned purple. He especially remembered the part when his vision started to go dark. Doctors were muttering something that didn't sound good, but Matthew was too busy telling Ivan what to type to really focus.
"Matvey, you're looking pale. You should stop." The Russian spoke up.
"I only have-few-sentences-left." The Canadian panted.
"Please, son." Arthur begged. "You're going to end up hurting yourself."
"No!" That was when Matthew started coughing.
Francis was shaking so hard, he looked ready to have a heart attack. "Mon Filles, zhis baby is more important zhan your schoolwork. I'm sure your professor will give you an extension."
Matthew nodded, still coughing.
After that, he focused all his attention on the birth. Within hours, it was all over. The doctors were carrying the screaming infant off to clean her up. Yes, her. Matthew and Ivan were now the parents of a healthy female according to the nurse.
Happy with what he had done, Matthew allowed himself to pass out.
