Susanna

The sun beat down on my body as I unloaded the last of the boxes from the U-Haul truck my mom rented. It was a warm, September day in the middle of Georgia, but it honestly felt like June in California, which is where we moved from.

Mama got a job offer to move to Savannah, Georgia from San Francisco. I didn't know why she was so excited about the move until she told me she would be making more business trips. Well, what business trips lawyers can get, anyway.

So here we are, in a large neighborhood, Mama enjoying every minute of it, and me wishing I was back in San Francisco, going to the movies with my friends, what I normally do on a Saturday evening.

"Susanna, hurry up and bring those in, I'm ready to get some food." My mother called from inside our new house.

I set the box down on the kitchen table she had already placed. "What are you cooking?"

"I'm not cooking jack squat! We're ordering takeout. How does Chinese sound?" Mama asked.

I shrugged, "Sounds pretty good, but there's a little flaw in your plan."

She raised an eyebrow. "And what's that?"

"We just moved here. How do we know where to order Chinese from?"

Mama's mouth formed a perfect "o". I laughed as the doorbell rang multiple times.

"We can ask whoever is on our front porch!" She exclaimed and practically ran to the door. I rolled my eyes at her enthusiasm and made my way to the door.

My mom was speaking with a woman of her age when I approached. I took a closer a look and noticed a tall boy next to her. He was around my age.

"-moved here for job purposes. Oh! Here's my daughter, Susanna."

"Hello." I smiled at the woman and the boy who I assumed was her son.

"Good day!" The woman spoke, and I was surprised to hear a British accent. What were English people doing right smack in the south?

"I'm Anne, this is my son Harry," She gestured to the tall boy. I smiled at him and looked a little closer. His hair was very curly, shoulder length, and chocolate brown. He had beautiful green eyes and a huge smile on his face.

"Hiiiii." He drawled out his greeting.

Anne giggled, "Harry isn't used to meeting new people. Anyways, we live a few houses down, and we wanted to invite you over for Sunday Brunch tomorrow afternoon."

"That would be great!" Mama clapped her hands together, "Susanna and I would love to get to know you two!"

"Oh, how sweet. Well, we live in the yellow cottage two houses down from yours. See you at noon tomorrow?" Anne raised an eyebrow.

"Of course." Mama nodded and bid them goodbye, as did I.

"Nice people." She mumbled after she closed the door.

"Yea," I stared at her, "But just one thing is wrong."

"What?"

"You forgot to ask about the Chinese place."
