He had some questions. They were in this together, so he was entitled to some questions right? If he was meant to protect her, risking his life in the process, there were something things he was allowed to ask right?
“Hey Taylor?”
She looked at him with her big doe eyes.
“Uh.. what’s your favorite color?”
Okay, so he chickened out. He just couldn’t stand to see her, or any female for that matter, cry. His questions would more than most likely make her cry.
“....Purple.” She said, giving him a weird look.
“Right. That wasn’t actually the question I was planning on asking...” This was ridiculous. He had a right to know, didn’t he? “Why is this guy really after you?”
She was silent for the next few minutes. When she finally spoke, she spoke very quietly.
“You really want to know, Blade?”
“Yes.”
“I’ll explain everything next time we stop.”
They drove another three hours before stopping at a dumpy little motel on Interstate 36. After checking in and getting some food, he asked her again to tell him what he wanted to know.
“Its very simple actually...” She started, taking a bite of one of the sandwiches they picked up at a little convenience store down the road. “He wanted me dead, and obviously I’m not dead, so he wants to finish that job.”
Her tone was careless but they way her eyes shone proved that she felt the opposite of how she spoke.
“Why did he want you dead?”
Wordlessly, she pulled her shirt off and ran her finger down the center of her chest. “Do you see this?”
Yes, he saw very clearly. She was wearing a black, lacy bra that made his mouth go dry. But, as he looked closer he saw a faintly discolored scar running from her collar bone to just below her rib cage. He tore he gaze away from her skin and into her eyes.
“When I was seven, I was diagnosed with congenital heart disease. I was told that I needed to have an orthotopic heart transplant, or I would die by the age of twenty-five.” While she told me this, she put her shirt back on. “When I was nine, I had the operation. Obviously, it was a success.” She smiled softly, the haunted smile barely curving her lips. Her eyes were far away, years into the past. “Of course, the first step to getting a heart transplant is finding a donor. That’s where Randy Finlee comes in.”
She didn’t realize she had tears on her cheeks and guilt in her eyes.
“I don’t understand... what does any of that have to do with Randy Finlee?” He asked, gently wiping the tears off her cheeks.
“I have his daughter’s heart.”
