Almost a Ghost

"Why did I agree to this?" I grumbled to myself as I plodded up the ruined sidewalk to the even more ruined building.

I was dared to enter the 'haunted' playground in the back of the abandoned daycare. The rumor is a grown man went back there and whatever he saw drove him to madness, because he came out rambling endlessly and frantically about ghostly children. It's also said he was lucky to survive. No one really knows how or why he wasn't supposed to.

And I guess I'm about to find out.

My friends were standing behind me, at the end of the sidewalk, muttering nervously. "Maybe you shouldn't go, Hannah," called Lina.

"No way!" I called. "I'm not chickening out!" I really wanna chicken out.

I walked through the crumbling doorway. The inside was dark, and debris was littered everywhere- beams, several desks, a plastic, broken playhouse laying on its side, and other junk so hidden by dust and age I couldn't tell you what it used to be.

There was a doorway in the back from which I could see the fading evening light and the silouette of a rusted swing set. The playground entrance!

I picked my way through the rubble, almost tripping over something unrecognizable. God, what happened here?

The playground finally came into view. The swing set was there, a small teeter totter, a tube looking thing, and what looked like a mini basketball hoop.

I remembered the dare: put one foot inside the playground and come back alive.

I took a step.

Suddenly light flooded everywhere. The evening was now midday, and there were kids running everywhere.

Kids?

The playground was bustling with laughter and shouting. The swing set was full of high swinging boys and girls, and several munchkins were crowded on each end of the teeter totter.

I stared around in amazement. Was this a time warp? Time travel? A long lost memory stuck here forever?

I felt something on my leg. A little girl with two blonde pigtails and a little sundress was tugging on my shirt. "Are you gonna come play?"

I had the overwhelming urge to join them. I began to take a step forward when I heard my name being called.

"Hannah! Hannah!"

I looked back at my other foot, which was still on the dirt floor of the actual... where? Was this why I could hear my name?

The girl tugged on my shirt again. "Come on."

I didn't want to play. But her voice...

Then all the other kids stopped whatever they were doing and turned around. Their eyes were glowing red. "Come play now," they all said in unison monotone. All of them moved towards me as if to pull me in.

I was terrified. I didn't want to play anymore. Why did I even want to in the first place?! I tried to scream, but nothing came out. What was going on?!

I was jolted back to reality when someone pulled on my arm. I was yanked backwards. Then I was looking into Lina's worried face. "What happened?"

I felt tears begin to run down my face. "You don't- don't wanna know."

"You're not... insane now are you? Driven mad like the other guy?" Lina cried, helping me sit up.

I shook my head. "I'm just shaken up." My voice was returning to normal.

"Should I check?" Lina stood up, walking slowly towards the door.

"NO!" I screamed. "STOP! DONT YOU FREAKING DARE!"

Lina stopped in her tracks. She was an inch from the doorway. I was crying again. I calmed myself down. "It's hell in there, Lina. Trust me. Please."

Lina looked warily at me. Then she nodded. "It's trust you, Hannah."

I nodded. "Then walk away from the door. Please."

She backed away and pulled me up. We walked outside together.

My friends looked at me eagerly. "Did you do it?"

I nodded. "I did it."

"Dare someone to do it again," they all chanted.

I shook my head. "I was lucky to have made it out with my sanity. I won't put anyone else through hell."

They all stared at me and Lina, who was still beside me. "You mean the legends are true?"

We both nodded. Now they all looked scared.

Lina and I both turned to leave while the rest if then stood staring at the place in amazement.
