The plane ride went by pretty fast and soon we were walking out of the airport into the crowds of loud people. "Isn't your friend, Isaac, picking us up?" I asked Quinn.
She nodded without looking back at me. Her eyes wandered through the streets around us and looked at each passing face. "He said he would be here around 4," she said. "What time is it, Violet?"
I looked down at my phone. "4:15," I said as I unlocked my phone.
I quickly texted my mom to let her know we had landed safely. She responded so quickly, I was sure she had been staring down at her phone just waiting for me to text. The whole time, she was probably thinking things like What if the plane crashed? Why hasn't she texted yet? Shouldn't they be landed by now? What if she gets kidnapped? I snapped away from the thoughts of my mother and looked up at Quinn who was waving out to a car. The guy driving smiled at her and waved back as he drove the shiny, black car up to the curb. He rolled the window down and Quinn walked up to the car. "Finally, Isaac!" Quinn said half jokingly. "God! You told us you'd be here at 4. It's like 4:20 right now."
"Haha! 4:20 blaze it. Am I right?" he laughed.
Quinn rolled her eyes and opened the trunk of the car. "You can put your stuff back here, Violet," she said as she stuffed her suitcases in.
I nodded and carried my bags and suitcases over to the car. "Let me help you with that," Isaac said grabbing one of the suitcases from me.
Startled, I stepped back a little. I hadn't even noticed that he had gotten out of the car. "U-uh, sure," I stuttered out as I gave him my suitcase.
"Don't flirt with her, Isaac," Quinn snapped. "I will stab you if you try flirting with another one of my friends."
Isaac laughed and continued helping me load my luggage into the trunk. "I'm not flirting, Q. I'm just simply being a good gentleman and helping her out."
We had finally finished putting all our belongings in the trunk. "I call shotgun!" Quinn said as she walked around to the passenger side.
I got in the back seat and rolled the window down a little. I stared out at the people passing by as we began to pull away. "By the way," Isaac said as he slipped on some sunglasses, "I wasn't flirting. I'm gay, Q."
Quinn's head turned so fast, I thought it would roll right off. "Oh my god, Isaac!" she shouted. "Why didn't you tell me? I had no idea!"
Isaac chuckled at her enthusiasm and looked at her. "How can you not tell? I thought it was pretty obvious," he said as he turned to look at me as we reached a stop light. "Could you tell, Vanessa?"
"It's Violet," I replied smiling. "And I suppose I could tell a little because I saw you checking out a guy while we were back by the trunk."
He laughed and his face began to turn red. "I didn't know you saw that."
"I'm pretty observant, " I stated with a laugh.
Quinn, who was adjusting her hair in the mirror, laughed. "She's always been observant. There was this one time when we were at summer camp back in fourth grade. We were all in a circle around a bonfire and it was really dark and Violet and I were talking and she was like 'Do you see that?' and I was like 'See what?' And then she pointed at the fire and was like 'That little spider crawling up onto the wood in the fire.' And like the spider was so small. I don't even know how she saw it. You're a strange, strange girl, Violet."
As she said the last part, she turned around and looked at me. I began laughing and she smiled back at me. I reached up to make her turn around, but instead, she grabbed my hands and pulled me forward. My face bumped the back of her seat and she began giggling. "Alright you two," Isaac said, "quit with the gay stuff."
Quinn and I began laughing even harder and she looked at Isaac with a sort of puzzled look. "Shut up, Isaac. We're just best friends. Anyway, why are you even wearing those stupid sunglasses? It's fall, you moron!" She pulled at his glasses.
"Hey! Stop it, Q! I'm serious! I'm driving!"
She didn't stop though. She continued to pull at his glasses until she had grabbed them completely off his face. Isaac drove the car into an empty parking lot and stopped. He let out a deep breath and turned toward Quinn. Knowing this probably wasn't going to be good, I stared down at my phone. "What the hell was that, Quinn? Seriously, what were you thinking? I was driving. You could've gotten us killed!" He slammed his hands down on the steering wheel and stared at her waiting for an answer.
"I'm sorry," she whispered handing the sunglasses back to him. "I didn't mean to upset you or anything..."
"Whatever."
Isaac put the sunglasses back on and turned on the radio. A song played quietly as we pulled out of the parking lot. I looked up at Quinn. She was staring out the window and I could see her sad reflection in it. Just like that, we had all went from happy and loud to sad and quiet. It was an uncomfortable feeling as we all just sat there quietly. I wanted to say something to break the awkward silence, but I didn't know what to say. Instead, I sat there silently, suddenly longing for the feeling of being back home.
