You walk the road with determined steps
To some place where devastation awaits and duty calls
You walk away with a passionate heart and an unwavering will
Never faltering in your strides as you imperil yourself
I take you in with greedy eyes and a heavy heart
And I count the steps as I watch your retreating back
My breath hitches in my throat as you disappear at the horizon
And my eyes mist over as a deep ache resides in my chest
Yet I send you off with mumbled prayers and whispers of love
With the hope of your return and the memory of your smile
